UDM Drops One-Goal Decision to Robert Morris

DETROIT (3/9/2014) - It was another close game for University of Detroit Mercy as UDM hosted the Robert Morris Colonials in the 2014 home opener at Titan Field Sunday afternoon. Robert Morris held on for a 12-11 win after Detroit closed to within one goal with 55 seconds remaining in regulation time.

The Titans (0-5) were down 12-8 with 10:56 to play in the final half before two goals from freshman Kelsi Pritchard and senior Erin Campbell's tally with 55 seconds left in regulation pulled Detroit to within one and a 12-11 score. Robert Morris (4-0) was able to force three Detroit fouls in the final seconds and hold onto the ball for the win.

Pritchard led Detroit with three goals and an assist while sophomore Kylie Birney and Campbell each had three goals. Redshirt junior Annie Mendoza scored for Detroit and senior transfer Vittoria Wallace tallied her first goal in a Titan uniform. Junior Tessa Keuler added two assists and now has 35 in her career and is six away from tying and seven from her becoming the school's new all-time career leader in that category.

Redshirt junior defender Morgan Lear had a team-high four ground balls and a caused turnover and was able to help Detroit clear the ball up the field throughout the day. Pritchard, Campbell, and sophomore Morgan Miller each had two ground balls while Pritchard added three caused turnovers and Miller had two caused turnovers.

Robert Morris went up 2-0 to start the game but the Titans roared back as five yellow cards from RMU helped give Detroit multiple opportunities with the advantage. The Titans capitalized, netting four goals with the extra player. Three of the next four goals for Detroit were scored with the advantage as Mendoza first took a pass from Keuler to make it 2-1 and then Campbell's unassisted marker with both teams at full strength tied it 2-2. The next two UDM goals were scored with the advantage as Birney netted her first of the day and Campbell took a pass from Pritchard with 12:49 left in the first half and the Titans up 4-2.

A Colonial goal followed but Birney's second marker gave Detroit a 5-3 lead it would take into the half.

The second half brought six straight goals for RMU as the visitors took a 9-5 lead.

UDM was not done yet as Pritchard's first of three on the day started the Titans back in the right direction. Birney followed with her team-leading ninth goal of the year -- scored with the advantage -- closed Detroit to within two at 9-7.

Robert Morris took advantage of a Detroit yellow card to regain its three-goal lead before Wallace netted her first NCAA goal at the 13:47 mark as she took a pass from Keuler to make the score 10-8. Wallace had played the last three years with the club team at Oakland University before coming to Detroit for the spring semester.

Brittany Byerly of RMU scored her third and fourth goals of the game to put the Colonials up 12-8 and the clock ticking with 10:56 to play in the second half.

Pritchard had the next two goals for the Titans with a marker at 9:30 and a second with 3:00 left on the clock before Campbell's goal with 55 seconds left brought about the 12-11 final.

UDM junior goalkeeper Lexie McCormick made 11 saves in net and also added a ground ball.

Detroit will host its second home game in three days on Tuesday as Delaware State will be at Titan Field for a 12:00 p.m. start.
