Schumacher's Six Goals Help Wingate Top Ohio Valley

Parkersburg, W.Va.---Wingate junior attack Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) scored six goals, leading the Bulldogs to a 14-9 victory over Ohio Valley on Monday afternoon at Stadium Field. Wingate improves to 4-2 overall, while OVU falls to 1-6 overall.

Wingate led wire-to-wire. Fittingly, Schumacher scored Wingate's first goal 75 seconds into the contest. Freshman attack Josh Wilson (Bel Air, Md.) and freshman midfield Kevin Norman (Ocala, Fla.) followed suit, staking the Bulldogs to an early 3-0 lead.

OVU got on the board, thanks to freshman attack Adam Dickson (White Rock, B.C.). He scored the Fighting Scots' first goal, then assisted freshman attack Brennan Stothers (Shawnigan Lake, B.C.) on the team's second tally. Schumacher started another 3-0 run (spanning both the first and second quarters) as Wingate took a 6-2 lead on a goal by freshman attack Tanner Kotch (Butler, Pa.) at the 14:06 mark of the second quarter.

The Fighting Scots answered with a 4-1 run to cut their deficit to 7-6. OVU junior attack Nathan Hodgins (Tecumseh, Ontario) scored two of the four goals. Sophomore attack Kyle Aylesworth (Kingston, Ontario) posted Ohio Valley's sixth goal with 3:33 to play in the second stanza.

Schumacher struck again 15 seconds later, nudging Wingate's lead to 8-6. Bulldog freshman midfield Steen Swedstedt (Mercer Island, Wash.) concluded the first half scoring at the 1:13 mark, sending the visitors to the halftime locker room with a 9-6 advantage.

Ohio Valley kept fighting, outscoring the Bulldogs 3-1 in the third quarter. Aylesworth and Wingate junior midfield Chase Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) traded goals to start the frame. OVU sophomore midfield Brandon Buck (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Dickson completed the third quarter scoring to bring the hosts within one goal at 10-9.

Schumacher left little doubt, as he single-handedly scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to put the game on ice. Freshman midfield Seth Grimwood (Huntingtown, Md.) assisted on the first score, while Wilson dished out the assist on the second goal. Wingate senior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 7:08 mark.

Kotch had two goals for the Bulldogs. He added one assist. Dickson had three goals and one assist to top the OVU point charts. Aylesworth and Hodgins had two goals each. Wingate outshot Ohio Valley 47-30 on the afternoon.

Both teams won 11 face-offs. Sneed led the Bulldogs with seven victories in 15 tries. OVU senior midfield Stan Mackey (Hartland, Mich.) was 11 of 22 from the face-off X. The Fighting Scots held a slim 39-38 edge in ground balls.

Wingate freshmen goalies Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Michael Connor (Stockport, England) kept Ohio Valley at bay. Ormerod played 26-plus minutes, recording three saves and allowing six goals. Connor finished the contest (33:33), posting five saves and surrendering three goals. OVU junior goalie Harley Gadomski (Buffalo, N.Y.) went the distance. In 60 minutes, he allowed 14 goals and recorded 16 saves.
