Wolverines Dismantle Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. Wesley defeated Southern Virginia, 22-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines (3-0) are off to their best start in program history while the Knights fall to 0-7.

The Wolverines scored the game's first 17 goals before Southern Virginia got on the board with 4:38 left in the third period. Wesley's Hunter Coho scored on an assist from Sam Seibert (1g, 5a) to close out the third period and the Wolverines outscored the Knights, 4-1 in the fourth as Drew Hammer (3g, 1a) beat the goalkeeper for two of his three goals on the day.

Mike Rakos scored three of his career-high six goals in the first period to lead Wesley to a 7-0 lead after the first 15 minutes. Jack O'Neill, who won 18 of 25 faceoffs and was credited with 13 ground balls on the day, also had a pair of assists in the first 15 minutes.

Seven different Wolverines tickled the twines for eight goals in the second period as Wesley took a 15-0 lead into halftime. Michael Balsamo (2g, 1a) was the lone Wolverine to score twice in the period, both coming unassisted and one which was on a man-down.

Rakos and Jack Redefer (2g) opened the second half with goals on assists by Seibert to open up a 17-0 advantage before SVU's first goal.

Goalkeeper Sam Kennedy made five saves in just less than 53 minutes of action before giving way to Shane Tracy who stopped the only shot he faced in seven minutes and seven seconds of action.

Looking to make it four-straight wins, Wesley will travel to Fort Mill, S.C, to take on Piedmont, in a 4:00 pm faceoff on Thursday, March 13.
