Defense Shines as Brockport Beats St. John Fisher

Freshman goalie Conor Nowak (Lakeview, NY/Eden) made 17 saves including five in the fourth quarter leading Brockport to a 6-5 victory over St. John Fisher Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

The win was the first for Brockport (2-2) over the Cardinals (2-1) since 2004 when the Golden Eagles scored a 13-10 win in Pittsford.

Brockport scored twice in the first seven minutes of the game as Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) each scored to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals answered 20 seconds after Brockport took the 2-0 advantage to cut the lead in half. St. John Fisher added the only two goals of the second quarter and took a 3-2 lead into the half time intermission.

In the third quarter, Steve Brissette (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) scored to tie the game just 26 seconds into the second half. The Golden Eagles added two more goals in the third quarter as freshman Jake Giudice (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Countryman each scored to build a 5-3 Brockport lead.

In the fourth quarter, Brockport made it a three-goal lead five minutes into the period as Countryman notched his third goal of the contest.

St. John Fisher battled back with a man-up goal with 6:44 on the clock and then, a minute later, closed to within a goal with Brockport clinging to a 6-5 lead.

Brockport had control with two minutes remaining but a turnover on a double-team gave the Cardinals the ball with just over a minute left.

The Cardinals had a pair of shots in the closing minute but both shots came from the outside edge of the offensive set and were both wide of the goal.

Countryman led the offense with three goals while Brissette and Riley Austin each had a goal and an assist.
