Massa Goes 20/24 on FOs as #18 Bryant Prevails at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth dropped a 12-7 decision to No. 18 Bryant on Tuesday afternoon at Monmouth Stadium. Monmouth, which had six players tally more than one point in the game, competed against its first nationally-ranked opponent in the non-conference contest.

Freshman Tyler Keen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) scored twice for the Hawks to increase his team-leading goal total to six, while classmates Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion), Tim Kemner (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), Dan Bloodgood (Jackson, N.J./Freehold Township) and Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) and junior Zach Johannes (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII/Franklin & Marshall) all tallied a goal and assist for the Blue & White.

"I am really proud of our guys and the effort they gave today, coming off a hard game at Rutgers on Saturday night, and a short turnaround before this one," said head coach Brian Fisher. "We were prepared and we played really well. I am encouraged about where we are heading and looking forward to playing our first MAAC game on Saturday."

Bryant took a 2-0 edge on a pair of unassisted scores in the first quarter from Collins Gantz and Rob Goeren, before Keen's first tally just 36 seconds into the second half, off an assist from Kemner, cut the Bulldog lead in half. Following a BU score, Johannes tallied his third goal, off a feed from Bloodgood to get Monmouth within 3-2 with 11:36 left in the half.

A pair of Shane Morrell goals to end the stanza, gave Bryant a 5-2 lead at the intermission.

Bloodgood's score off an assist from Berger to open the second half, got Monmouth within 5-3, but the Bulldogs answered with three straight scores to take an 8-3 advantage with 5:11 showing. Daly found Kemner for the Hawks with 40 seconds left in the quarter, as Monmouth trailed 8-4 through three periods.

After Bryant took a 10-4 lead with 13:12 left, Daly netted an unassisted score for the Hawks, while goals from Berger and Keen with 6:32 and 1:36 remaining, respectively, got Monmouth within 12-7 to close out the game.

Bryant (4-2) outshot Monmouth 45-25, while Monmouth (13) caused 20 Bulldog turnovers.

Freshman Nick Hreshko (Warrington, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) made four saves in the opening 30 minutes of action for the Hawks, while junior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty/Essex-Howard C.C.) made 10 stops, his second double-digit save effort this year.

Monmouth (0-5) returns to action on Saturday, March 16, when the Hawks play their first-ever MAAC league game at Canisius at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y., at 3:00 p.m.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. Junior faceoff specialist Kevin Massa (Huntington, N.Y.) went 20 of 24 from the X with 16 ground balls to lead No. 18 Bryant, which saw 10 different players get on the board in a 12-7 win over Monmouth Tuesday afternoon on the road.

The Bulldogs (4-2) were paced by two goals apiece from senior JK Poirier (Coatesville, Pa.) and sophomore Shane Morrell (Glen Mills, Pa.), with the latter adding a pair of assists for a game-best four points. Monmouth (0-5) got two scores from Tyler Keen with a goal and an assist from five different player in the contest.

The Hawks kept the game close through the opening two quarters, cutting the Bulldogs' 2-0 first-period lead scored on unassisted markers by sophomore Collins Gantz (Denver, Colo.) and senior Rob Goeren (Massapequa, N.Y.) in half in the opening moments of the second with Keen's first tally, assisted by Tim Kemner.
