Hartwick Rallies with Final Four Goals to Nip Misericordia

DALLAS, PA Down 11-8 with less than 20 minutes to go, Hartwick scored the game's final four goals while holding the Cougars scoreless in a 12-11 road victory. The Hawks improve to 3-2 overall with the win.

A pair of freshmen - Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) and Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) combined for nine of the Hawks' 12 goals on the day. Junior Emily Jweid (Marcy, Whitesboro) contributed two goals and three assists.

Liz Mulvery gave the Cougars the 11-8 lead with her second goal of the game with 19:55 left in the contest and Misericordia seemed destined for their second win of the year. The Hawks had other plans as Rosenberg tallied at 19:14, Coons scored off a Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) feed at 13:35, and Rosenberg's fifth tally of the game tied the score at 10:31. Jweid put the Hawks in front for the first time all day with 8:28 left on the clock.

With the advantage, the Hawks' defense held up. Misericordia out-shot the Hawks 6-0 over the final eight minutes, with Hartwick goalkeeper Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs HS) making four stops to preserve the victory.

The Cougars started the game with three goals in the opening 3:29 to forge ahead 3-0 in the early going. Coons got the Hawks into the scoring column with her first of the day at 20:26 only to have Melina Juliano score the first of her four goals 40 ticks later.

Coons and Rosenberg scored 22 seconds apart to narrow the gap to one, 4-3. The two teams traded tallies before the Cougars would score three unanswered goals in a 2:08 span deep in the first half to take their biggest lead of the game, 8-4, heading into the intermission.

The Hawks quickly got right back into the game with Coons, Rosenberg, and Meagan Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) each scoring in the first 3:18 of the second half, and Misericordia's lead was trimmed to one, 8-7.

Kate Pagnotta got one back for Misericordia and Jweid answered 43 seconds later to keep it a one-goal game. Brooke North and Mulvey would give the Cougars 11 before the Hawks would mount their comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Rosenberg netted five goals on the day with Coons scoring four times. Wright led Hartwick with three ground balls. Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) added two ground balls and a team-best two caused turnovers. Jweid had a pair of ground balls.

Juliano (4) and North (3) combined for seven scores for the Cougars. Goalkeeper Katie McLoughlin made 14 stops in the Misericordia cage.

Luce would finish with 12 saves for the Hawks. He made seven in the first half.

Hartwick returns to action on Saturday, March 15 when it hosts New Paltz in a makeup game from March 8.
