Ohio Wesleyan Falls to Wooster, 7-6

Freshman midfielder Channing Bush (Chevy Chase, Md./Connelly School) scored to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 7-6, but Wooster was able to withstand a last-minute threat and escape with a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by sophomore midfielder Julia Fouts (Cleveland Heights/Hathaway Brown).

Wooster closed to within a single goal on two occasions, with senior attacker Helena Iaquinta (Nashua, N.H.) and senior midfielder Megan Sward (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scoring to bring the Fighting Scots within 3-2.

The Bishops took a 4-2 halftime lead when Wooster keeper Nicki Hunt (Greenville, Del./St. Pauls) attempted to pick up a ground ball and saw the ball pop out of her stick and into the net. Sophomore attacker Alexa Deaton (Eden, Md./Mercersburg Academy) was credited with the goal.

Wooster opened the second half with four straight scores, all by Iaquinta and the last three coming on free position shots. The last, with 13:27 on the clock, gave the Fighting Scots a 6-4 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan responded with a Deaton goal to close within 6-5, then won the ball back and had a chance to tie only to see Fouts' shot zip just over the crossbar.

The Fighting Scots took a 7-5 lead on a score by senior midfielder Allison Harrod (Cincinnati/Sycamore) with 7:56 to play.

Bush brought the Bishops within 7-6 with 1:57 remaining. Wooster won the ensuing draw, but Ohio Wesleyan got the ball back with :49 remaining. The Bishops were unable to get off a shot but got the ball back again with :13 to go. Fouts' shot with :04 left was wide, but she was fouled on the play, and on the ensuing free position shot, Fouts' shot went just outside the left post.

Fouts and Deaton shared the Ohio Wesleyan lead with 2 goals apiece. Sophomore Maggie Eichenlaub (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) had 8 saves.

Iaquinta led Wooster with 5 goals. Hunt finished with 5 saves for Wooster.
