Stony Brook Comes Back, Nips Sacred Heart on Late Goal

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, British Columbia) registered a career-high seven points and sophomore Brody Eastwood (Victoria, British Columbia) chipped in four goals to lead Stony Brook to a 14-13 over Sacred Heart Tuesday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Rogers scored a career-high four goals, including three in the first half. Six of his seven points were tallied in the first 30 minutes.

Eastwood posted his 14th career hat trick. He has 20 goals this season, including eight on extra-man opportunities.

Junior Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.), who scored the game-winning goal with 1:16 left in regulation, scored two goals and added four assists.

Sophomore Matt Schultz (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied two goals and two assists for a second straight game.

Freshman Kyle Rowe (Vienna, Va.) went 17 of 28 from the 'X'. He had a game-high eight ground balls for Stony Brook (3-3).

Alex Dodge and Brian Masi each had three goals for Sacred Heart (1-4). Alex Miller had a goal and four assists.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. Sacred Heart lead 13-12 with 8:18 to play Tuesday night against Stony Brook at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium but couldn't hold off the Seawolves, as Stony Brook came back to win 14-13.

Midfielders Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) each had three goals to lead the Pioneers' offense. Dodge also added an assist for a four-point game and had five ground balls. Alex Milller (Ridgewood, N.J.) had a team-high four assists and five points. Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) and Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) each had a goal and an assist. Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) had a team-high six ground balls with Sean Miller (Toms River, N.J.) adding five.

Stony Brook (3-3) scored first Tuesday night as Mike Rooney scored a bounce shot from right in front of the crease at the 12:41 mark of the opening quarter. Sacred Heart (1-4) responded with 10:54 left in the first when Dodge's shot hit Stony Brook goalie Patrick Fleming and narrowly crossed the goalline, tying the game at 1-1.

The Pioneers took the lead with 6:35 to play in the first when freshman Bryce Jurk (Burlington, Ont.) fired a laser from 20 yards out to score his first career goal, making the score 2-1. The Seawolves took back the lead on back-to-back Challen Rogers tallies, going up 3-2 with 2:44 left in the first. Mawdsley tied the game 3-3 with six seconds left in the quarter, scoring a quick stick goal off a Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) assist.

The Pioneers took their first lead of the game 1:14 into the second quarter when Marquis scored man-up to make the score 4-3. Stony Brook came back with goals from Chris Schultz, Brody Eastwood, and Rogers to take a 6-4 lead with 7:34 left in the half.

Dodge cut the deficit to one, 6-5, with his second goal of the game at the 6:48 mark of the quarter, but the Seawolves went on another three-goal spurt to take a 9-5 lead with 3:15 to play in the first half. Masi scored with 2:35 left to make the score 9-6, but Schultz scored with 20 seconds left to give Stony Brook a 10-6 halftime advantage.

Stony Brook led 11-6 early in the third quarter before the Pioneers made a run. It started with an Ian Farley (Camillus, N.Y.) goal from Dodge that made the score 11-7 with 8:34 to play in the quarter. Twenty-three seconds later, Newbold went end to end after scooping the ground ball off the faceoff and scored to get Sacred Heart within three, 11-8.

Masi then added his second goal of the game at the 6:24 mark, with an assist from Marquis, to get the Pioneers within two at 11-9. The two teams traded goals to end the quarter, as Dodge's third goal of the game made the score 12-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
