Ohio Wesleyan Uses 4-Goal Run to Down Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA Ohio Wesleyan scored four straight goals in the third quarter to pull out an 11-7 win over Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday afternoon.

Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) put the Tigers on top 1-0 at the 10:51 mark, but three consecutive scores from the Battling Bishops gave them a 3-1 advantage with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Another Armstrong goal closed out the quarter with the Tigers trailing 3-2.

OWU's John Umbach pushed their advantage back up to two, 4-2, less than two minutes in to the second frame, but an Armstrong man-up goal at 8:26 followed by a Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) score at 2:35 evened the game at 4-4. Kyle Foster would net a goal with 42 seconds to go until halftime to give Ohio Wesleyan a 5-4 advantage going in to the break.

Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) knotted the game at 5-5 31 seconds into the third quarter, and the game would remain 5-5 over the next 10 minutes. The Tigers only penalty of the day looked to change momentum as Casey Helms scored a man-up goal just 12 seconds into the penalty at 3:49.

The Battling Bishops would go on to score three more goals in the quarter, including a backbreaking score from John Umbach at the buzzer. The two teams would trade two goals apiece in the fourth as the Tigers could never cut the deficit to less than three.

Armstrong scored three goals for Hampden-Sydney. Koferl and Jared Arntzen (Atlanta, GA/Blue Ridge) combined to win 10 of 19 face-offs.

Umbach found the back of the net five times, and Foster posted five points on two goals and three assists. Helms tallied two goals and two assists, and Tommy Minkler had two scores. Ryan McMahon notched nine saves while Sam Gioseffi went 9 for 18 on face-offs but committed six face-off violations.

One major factor in the game was extra-man opportunities. Ohio Wesleyan got one chance and scored, the Tigers got nine opportunities but scored just one extra-man goal.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Bridgewater, VA on Saturday to open up ODAC play vs. Bridgewater College at 1:00 pm.
