Honovich Ties Goals Mark as Valiants Fall at Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. Senior co-captain Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored five times to tie the school's all-time goals record, but it wasn't enough as Manhattanville dropped a 21-8 decision to Worcester State in a non-conference match-up at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium on a rainy Wednesday night.

Honovich tied for the game-high with six points, scoring five times and adding an assist to go with a game- and career-high 10 draw controls. Fellow senior co-captain Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) had two goals and an assist, while junior Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) added a goal and an assist.

Worcester State's Jackie Connors tied Honovich for the game-high with six points on four goals and two assists, while Molly Kilday led all players with five goals. Vicki O'Brien chipped in four goals and Kalia Chase had three goals and an assist as well for the Lancers.

Manhattanville had trouble stringing together goals throughout the evening in the soggy and at times torrential rain, as the Valiants didn't score back-to-back goals all night long. Honovich got the game started in the opening minute with her first of the night, and then after a pair of Lancer goals she evened the score at two 2:57 into the contest.

But while the Valiants had trouble putting together runs, the Lancers had no such issues. Three straight Worcester goals gave them a three-goal cushion, and after a third Honovich goal the home team went on a 7-1 run that gave them a 12-4 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. Honovich got one back with 12 seconds left off a pass from Marcimo, making it a 12-5 score at the half.

Honovich tied the program's all-time goals record 2:53 into the second half, scoring the 213th goal of her career to tie former Valiant All-American Katie Frattarola '02. With 239 career points, the midfielder is also two points away from tying former teammate Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) '13 for fourth place all-time in points at Manhattanville.

Unfortunately for the Valiants, the visitors could not muster much offense the rest of the way, as Worcester State out-scored Manhattanville 8-2 over the final 25 minutes.

Worcester State finished the game with a 26-20 edge in shots. Junior Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) suffered the loss, allowing 13 goals on 16 shots over the first 30 minutes before sophomore Caitlin Sosa (New York, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) came on the second half, in which she allowed the final eight tallies.

Honovich will look to break the school's career goals mark at home on Saturday, as the Valiants will face their toughest test of the season against IWLCA #7 College of New Jersey beginning at 1:00 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field.
