Mount Saint Vincent Outguns Thomas for First Win

Yonkers, N.Y. Junior Melina Mezzanotte (Shirley, N.Y.) scored five goals and freshman Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) totaled five points as Mount Saint Vincent posted its first win of the season with a 16-12 triumph over visiting Thomas on Thursday.

After falling behind 3-0 in the early going on Thursday, Mount Saint Vincent ripped off three straight to even the score at the 14:35 mark of the first half. Steimel and Mezzanotte started the run with back-to-back goals 19 seconds apart before Fraser evened the score with her first of the day with 14:35 left before the break.

Miranda Tinsman would give the Terriers the lead back briefly after the Fraser goal, but Mount Saint Vincent closed the half with the next three goals to take a 6-4 advantage into the intermission. Mezzanotte and Steimel scored a minute apart to give the Dolphins the lead back before Mezzanotte closed out the scoring in the final minute to give the Mount the slim halftime advantage.

The two teams would split the first eight goals of the second half before the Mount tallied three straight times to open a 13-8 lead. Mount Saint Vincent went on to score three of the next four goals after the run to push its lead to 16-9. Catherine Maas (West Hartford, Conn.), Brittany DeGennaro (Manorville, N.Y.) and Jessica McAllister (Floral Park, N.Y.) all scored their first goals of the season over that stretch.

Mount Saint Vincent finished the game with seven different goal scorers and four players with at least one goal and one assist. Mezzanotte led the Dolphins with five markers and Steimel posted four goals and an assist. Fraser led the Mount with three assists to go along with three goals and Laura Carr (Franklin Square, N.Y.) added a goal and a pair of helpers.

McAllister paced the Dolphins with five groundballs in the game and six draw controls. Carr won five draw controls for Mount Saint Vincent and Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) added three. Colleen Walsh (Manchester, Vt.) closed a strong game with three groundballs and four caused turnovers. Tinsman wrapped up the game with five goals for Thomas and Jillian Lambert picked up six groundballs. Brittany Premo added six groundballs, five caused turnovers, three draw controls and two points.

Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal after stopping 14 shots and picking up one groundball. Brittany Fox made eight saves for Thomas in the loss.

Overall, Mount Saint Vincent was outshot in the game 38-27, including 26-24 in shots on goal. The Terriers held the edge in groundballs 31-24, but the Dolphins won the draw control battle 16-14. The Dolphins wrapped up the game 12 for 21 in clearing chances and tallied five free-position goals.

With the win on Thursday, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 1-2 overall. The Dolphins will be back in action on Monday, when they travel to Wilkes. Opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
