No. 1 RIT Extinguishes No. 2 Red Dragons at the Carrier Dome

SYRACUSE, NY -- No. 1 RIT (4-0) improved to 4-0 on the season with a convincing 18-11 win over No. 2 Cortland (4-1) in non-conference action at the Carrier Dome Thursday evening.

Freshman Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led RIT with seven points on four goals and three assists. Casey Jackson (Victoria, BC/Claremont) tallied six points on five goals and an assist, while Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin), Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) and Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) each had two goals for the Tigers.

RIT handed Cortland its first regular season loss since the Tigers beat the Red Dragons 12-11 back on March 30, 2011.

Cortland held a 43-39 shot advantage and a 41-33 ground ball edge. The Tigers won 17 of 33 face-offs and went 16 of 19 on clearing attempts. The Tigers were 0 for 2 on the man advantage.

Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) won 15 of 29 face-offs for RIT and grabbed 10 ground balls. Mac Keehfus (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) added three ground balls and caused a team-best two turnovers. Pat Johnston (Long Beach, CA/Norwell (MA)) picked up his third win of the season, making 19 saves.

Matt Rakoczy led Cortland with three goals and two assists. Nate Beresovoy added two goals, while Mike Cantelli, Hunter Osborne and Tyler Chin each scored a goal. Scott Tota took the loss in net for Cortland, making seven saves.

RIT jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Jackson and Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park).

Rakoczy and MIke Cummings scored consecutive goals for the Red Dragons, tying the score on Cummings' goal with 10:17 to play in the opening quarter.

RIT outscored Cortland 4-1 over the final 8:57 of the first quarter, taking a 6-3 lead on an unassisted goal from Wisman with :21 seconds to play in the opening quarter.

Rakoczy opened the second-quarter scoring with his fifth goal of the season, cutting RIT's lead to 6-4.

Consecutive goals from Aquin and Jackson gave the Tigers an 8-4 lead at the 10:26 mark of the second quarter.

Goals from Cody Consul, Osborne and Rakoczy gave the Red Dragons some mometum later in the second quarter, cutting RIT's lead to 8-7.

The Tigers outscored Cortland 3-1 over the final 3:52 of the first half, taking an 11-8 lead into the half. The 11 goals scored by RIT was the most the Red Dragons had allowed in a half since the 2009 season.

RIT blew the game open outscoring Cortland 6-2 in the third quarter, extending its lead to 17-10. Lee scored two goals in the third quarter to pace the TIgers.

Both teams exchanged goals in the foruth quarter for the 18-11 final.

RIT has now won 12 straight regular season games dating back to the 2013 season. THe Tiger's last loss in the regular season was to Cortland back on March 27, 2013.

The Tigers will face Western New England University on Saturday, March 15 at noon at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Top-ranked RIT ended No. 2 Cortland's 44-game regular-season winning streak with an 18-11 victory at the Carrier Dome on the Syracuse University campus Thursday night in non-conference action. The Tigers (4-0) were the last team to defeat the Red Dragons (4-1) in regular-season play with a 12-11 win at Cortland during the 2011 season.

For Cortland, junior Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) led the offense with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Mike Cummings (Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and freshman Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) each netted a pair of goals. Senior Tyler Chin (Hauppauge) contributed a goal and an assist, while senior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and juniors Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) and Hunter Osborne (Homer) added one goal apiece. Senior Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) and freshman Mike Hart (Cornelius, NC/Hough) chipped in with an assist.
