Wheeling Jesuit Defeats Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Wheeling Jesuit picked up an important road win over the team that knocked them out of playoff contention last season with an 11-9 victory over the Lindenwood Lions.

The win keeps the Cardinals perfect at 4-0 in their first season under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Dugan. It was also WJU's first ECAC Conference win, where L.U. was picked to finish ahead of the Cardinals in the pre-season Coaches poll.

WJU was led by sophomore standout Bryce Brochu (Welland, Ont.) who tallied three goals on the night, and junior Tyler Buchan out of British Columbia who put in a pair of goals and added two assists as well.

"It's always nice to win a conference game on the road, but I'm especially proud of our team for this win, which comes on the heals of a physically and mentally exhausting seven day spring break trip to Florida," said coach Dugan. "We had a good team effort today and I'm especially happy with the production we got out of Tyler Buchan. I think we have a pretty well balanced offense and its good to see different people stepping up each game."

All told, nine different Cardinals found the back of the net, with Brian Frank, Landon DelPrince, Tyler Johnson, Rob Mills, Evan Hodel and Corey Luebbe each adding goals.

WJU found themselves down 3-1 at the end of the first quarter after getting on the board first with a goal from Brochu in the 11th minute. The Cardinals came storming back in the 2nd quarter however, with Brochu, Johnson, Buchan, Hodel, and Mills each adding unassisted goals to give the Cards a 6-4 lead at the half.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Cardinals pushed out to a 10-5 lead to put some space between them and the Lions. It was space they needed too, with LU scoring four goals late in the game. The comeback was not to be however, and the Cardinals walked off with the 11-9 victory.

"We're excited to head home for another critical ECAC match-up with Walsh," added Dugan.

Dugan's Cardinals will play their first home match of the season when ECAC foe Walsh University comes calling to Wheeling on Wednesday, March 19th. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm, under the lights at the new Bishop Schmitt Field.
