No. 7 Washington College Holds off Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Seventh-ranked Washington College improved to 5-0 with a 10-8 win over host Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action this afternoon in Delaware, Ohio. Senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) led the Shoremen with two goals and two assists in the victory.

Freshman midfielder Matt Allen (Wrentham, Mass./Bishop Feehan) put the Shoremen on the board first with his first collegiate goal with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter. Spencer Schnell evened the score for the Battling Bishops (5-2) with an extra-man goal off a feed from Matt Maier with 5:58 to play in the first quarter.

Washington opened the second quarter with three goals in the first 3:43 of the period. Nowicki opened the scoring with a goal just 1:46 into the period. Junior midfielder Grant Hughes (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes)followed with a goal with 12:35 to play in the period and junior attackman Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md./Boys' Latin) gave the Shoremen a 4-1 advantage when he scored off a Nowicki feed with 11:17 remaining before halftime.

Ohio Wesleyan then went on a three-goal run of its own, starting with a goal by Kyle Foster off a John Umbach assist with 8:52 left in the period. Tommy Minkler then scored off a Foster feed with 5:36 on the clock, before Umbach netted a goal off a Casey Helms assist with 3:28 remaining before the break to even the score at 4-4 at halftime.

Senior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) opened the third quarter scoring with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton) just 57 seconds into the period. Ohio Wesleyan evened the score with an extra-man goal by Schnell off an Maier assist with 8:07 to play.

But the Shoremen went back in front on a goal by senior attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph)1:03 later. Ohio Wesleyan evened the score for the final time when Foster found Umbach for a goal with 2:56 left in the period, tying the game at 6-6. Hughes gave Washington the lead for good with a goal with 42 seconds left in the quarter.

Junior midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) won the face-off to open the fourth quarter and scored six seconds later to give Washington an 8-6 edge. Minkler pulled the Bishops to within a goal when he scored with 11:14 to go. Nowicki then scored a goal with 6:46 to go and found Cusick for an extra-man goal at 5:08 to push the lead to 10-7. Robbie Fiamengo found Helms for an Ohio Wesleyan extra-man goal with 2:46 left to round out the scoring.

Cusick and Hughes joined Nowicki as two-goal scorers for the Shoremen. Trapp was 14 for 22 on face-offs with five ground balls, while senior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) made nine saves in the win.

Schnell and Umbach each had two goals and one assist for Ohio Wesleyan in the loss, while Minkler scored two goals and Foster had a goal and two assists. Ryan McMahon made 18 saves for the Battling Bishops.

The Shoremen, who enjoyed a 57-30 advantage in shots in this afternoon's game, return to action Tuesday with the annual "War on the Shore" rivalry game for the Charles B. Clark Cup at Salisbury. Opening face-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
