Knights Nip Centenary in Defensive Battle

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary handed Centenary its third-straight loss on Saturday, topping the Cyclones 4-2 in a low-scoring affair in Newburgh, New York.

The Knights (1-3) received goals from Sean Nolan and Sebastian Cena during the opening 15 minutes and tacked on a third score in the second quarter for a 3-0 halftime edge.

Freshman attacker Sam Nickelson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) fired in his first collegiate goal off a feed from junior midfielder Joshua Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) early in the third quarter to make the score 3-1.

Caven found the back of the net with 9:29 remaining in the game to slice the Knights' lead in half; however, Stephen White recorded an insurance tally just under two minutes later for MSM.

Caven scooped up six ground balls and won 4 of 6 face offs during the game, while junior defender Nick Perkalis (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) grabbed a game-high nine ground balls and collected two caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Malecki (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) suffered the loss in net despite allowing just three goals on nine shots. Classmate Kevin Switzer (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) stopped seven shots in relief of Malecki.

MSM net minder Connor Haran blocked 13 of the 15 shots he faced.

Centenary travels to Virginia Beach, Va., on Thursday where it will face Nichols College (Mass.) at 7:00 pm.
