No. 18 Bowdoin Knocks off No. 12 Hamilton

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin jumped to an early lead and held off a second-half charge to defeat Hamilton, 13-9, Saturday at Ryan Field.

The 18th-ranked Polar Bears earn their first NESCAC win of the season and improve to 3-2 (1-2 NESCAC). The Continentals drop to 1-2 (1-2 NESCAC) with the loss.

Bowdoin's win was spearheaded by the senior duo Betsy Sachs and Jordan Smith. Sachs tallied five goals in the victory while Smith added four goals and three assists. Isabel Sippel made 15 saves, including ten in the second half, to earn the win for the Polar Bears.

Hamilton was led by two goals and two assists from Margaret Gabriel. Emily Brodsky scored two goals and dished out an assist while Lauren Brady had a score and two helpers.

The Polar Bears came out strong, scoring the first five goals of the game in the opening 9:35. Bowdoin extended its lead to as many as six goals, 8-2, later in the period before Gabriel and Brady notched back-to-back goals for Hamilton to trim the lead to 8-4. Olivia Raisner converted on a fast break goal for Bowdoin, off a downfield pass from Smith, just before the halftime buzzer to give the Polar Bears a 9-4 lead at the break.

Hamilton opened the second half on a 3-1 surge, closing the gap to three goals, 10-7, with 23:25 remaining. But consecutive goals by Lindsay Picard and Dana White gave the Polar Bears some breathing room and a 12-7 advantage with 18 minutes to go. Sippel sealed the win with several late saves to lift Bowdoin to victory.

Hamilton's Hannah Rubin allowed six goals in the opening 11:45 without making a save before giving way to Kari Koga, who stopped seven shots and permitted seven goals over the final 48:15. Gabriel contributed on both ends of the field for the Continentals, causing three turnovers and collecting two ground balls.

Bowdoin dominated the draws on Saturday, holding a 15-8 edge thanks to seven from Picard and five from Sachs. Defensively, Erica Nangeroni had four caused turnovers and two ground balls.

The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday at Middlebury for a 10:30 a.m. start. Hamilton will travel south to play Babson on Tuesday in Clermont, Fla. at 1:00 p.m.
