No. 19 Navy Steams Past Bucknell as Gennaro Scores Five

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Aimee Gennaro scored five goals and national scoring leader Loren Generi had three goals, an assist and 12 draw controls to lead No. 19 Navy to a 15-4 win over Bucknell in Patriot League women's lacrosse action Saturday at blustery Graham Field.

Emily Kookogey scored twice and Katelyn Miller had a strong all-around game with a goal, four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls for the Bison.

Now 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League, Navy scored on its first two shots of the game and led 10-0 at the half. Bucknell (0-7, 0-2) was much better in the second half when it scored four times on nine shots, but by then the deficit was just too deep.

Bucknell's first goal of the day came on a nice fastbreak sequence after Kerri Althouse forced a turnover in the defensive end. Kookogey carried the ball into the offensive zone and fed Emily Becker who then found Christina Manis near the crease on the left side.

Navy increased its lead to 12-1 on goals by Jill Coughlin and Aislinn Probst, but then Kookogey scored her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season in succession for the Bison. The first came on a precise running shot to the lower-left corner of the cage. She then scored on a bounce shot on an 8-meter attempt.

Miller, who has been playing more of a defensive role for the Bison in the last two games, scored her sixth of the year with 6:25 to play when she won a draw and then ran past several defenders for a pretty goal.

Navy outshot the Bison 31-14 and led 16-12 in ground balls and 13-8 in draw controls. Generi captured 12 of those draws for the Mids, winning them all to herself from the center spot. Bucknell committed 15 turnovers to 12 for Navy.

The Bison will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Graham Field against Patriot League newcomer Loyola.

LEWISBURG, Pa. Behind senior Aimee Gennaro's (Havertown, Pa.) five goals, No. 19 Navy women's lacrosse defeated Bucknell, 15-4, Saturday at Holmes Stadium. Navy starts the season 8-0 for the first time in program history.

"We came out strong and had very solid first half performance," said head coach Cindy Timchal. "We were able to keep our distance in the second half and finished out a good road win over Bucknell."

Gennaro paced the Mids offense with five goals on five shots. The senior co-captain has recorded 21 goals in her four career games against the Bison. Junior Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) and senior Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) combined for six points on five goals and one assist. Freshman Morgan Young (Baltimore, Md.) recorded her first collegiate goal.

"Aimee [Gennaro] read the defense very well today and has had much success against Bucknell historically," said Timchal. "Despite Bucknell buckling down on her in the second half, she was able to still score one more time with good resilience."

The Mids outshot the Bison, 31-14 and held an advantage in draw controls, 13-8. Generi broke the program record for draw controls in a single game with 12. She and Erin Rawlick previously held the record with 11.

Navy (8-0, 2-0 Patriot League) took care of business in the first half, scoring 10 goals on 19 shots. Gennaro and Generi led the way in the first 30 minutes, combining for eight points on seven goals and one assist. Gennaro scored three of Navy's first six goals to give the Mids an early 6-0 lead with 14:55 left. Generi then tallied two of Navy's final four goals of the half in a span of 8:46.
