Presidents Defeated by Rangers in Landmark Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Drew overcame a 3-2 halftime deficit with six third-quarter goals to pull out a 12-6 Landmark Conference men's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents (4-3, 0-1 LC) scored twice, both goals by Tim Angell, in the final six minutes of the second quarter to produce a 3-2 edge after 30 minutes.

The Rangers (2-3, 1-0 LC) took control of the game with the first four goals of the third period. Mike Marone scored one and set up another for a 6-3 advantage at the 11:21 mark. Two of the goals during the spurt came six seconds apart.

Kyle Heinig stopped the Drew run with a goal at the 7:58 mark, but Drew netted two more third-period goals, including Mike Lloyd's tally with seven seconds left when the Rangers were playing down to men to penalties.

The Rangers added four unanswered goals during a seven-minute stretch in the fourth to run away with the conference win.

Angell finished with four goals for W&J, while Heinig and Casey Smallwood both netted one goal and dished out three assists. Conor Crowe suffered the loss in goal and made 16 saves.

Mark Barus and Andrew Somps led Drew with three-goal efforts. Kyle Mariboe turned back 13 shots in goal. The Rangers outshot the Presidents 45-34 and received 15 faceoff wins in 19 attempts from Kevin Cleary.

W&J hits the road south during spring break and will play at Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
