Detroit Drops Physical, 15-Penalty Contest to Marquette

DETROIT (3/15/2014) -- In a game that featured 15 penalties and a lot physical play from both sides, University of Detroit Mercy fell to Jesuit-rival Marquette, 15-10, on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.

Junior Mike Birney (Plymouth, Mich./Catholic Central) led five Titan goal scorers with four goals and an assist. Junior Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, Ont./Denis Morris) had two goals and a career-high three assists, while senior Alex Maini (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) tallied two markers and a helper.

It was close right from the start as Detroit (3-4) tied it up at 1-1 almost five minutes into the contest as junior Brandon Beauregard (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) fed Adams for a score. Marquette (2-5) then went up 3-1, but Maini was able to pull the red, white and blue within one, 3-2, with a little more than three minute left in the first.

The Titans evened things at 3-3 early in the second as junior Scott Drummond (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) took a pass from senior Tom Masterson (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas) with the man-up advantage, but the Golden Eagles responded with two-straight goals for a 5-3 lead with 11:51 remaining.

UDM made it a one-goal deficit again as Birney fired one past the keeper, but Marquette ended the second quarter with three-straight tallies to take an 8-4 advantage.

Detroit posted the opening goal of the third as Masterson was set up by Adams, but Marquette came right back with one of its own for a 9-5 lead. The Titans then took advantage of a pair of Golden Eagles' penalties as Adams scored his second of the game at the 6:10 mark and Birney netted another nearly 40 seconds after to pull UDM back within two, 9-7.

Marquette would stave off that charge and score two in a row to once again open a four-goal lead, 11-7, after three periods of action.

The Titans made another run as Adams found Birney for his seventh career hat trick with 13:20 left and just a few minutes later, Birney was able to come up with an assist as he hooked up with Maini to make it 11-9 with 10:32 on the clock.

Detroit just could not get that one last stop and Marquette scored for a three-goal advantage, but Birney's season-high fourth marker had the Titans down by just two, 12-10, with 6:42 left.

That was as close as UDM would get it as the Golden Eagles tacked on a few late scores to pull away.

Detroit was outshot, 42-29, but did score on five of its eight extra-man opportunities.

Maini and Drummond also each picked up four ground balls, while sophomore Paul Bitetti (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) and redshirt freshman JD Hess (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) each had two caused turnovers and a GB. Freshman Jason Weber (Whitby, Ont./Christ School (N.C.) got the start in net and made 14 saves, while recording two ground balls.

The Titans will now get ready for MAAC play as they open the conference slate next Sunday, March 23, in Buffalo, N.Y., at Canisius. Game time is set for noon.
