MacKay's Double OT Winner Sends Vermont Past Wagner

Staten Island, NY William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and David DeCirce (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scored two goals apiece but Vermont overcame an 8-3 deficit in posting an 11-10 victory over the Seahawks in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Hameline Field.

On the heels of a 9-8 overtime loss to Detroit last time out on March 8, the hard-luck Seahawks fall to 1-4 on the season while Vermont improves to 4-3.

Statistically, this match-up was as close as the final score would indicate as Vermont held a 43-42 edge in shots and led in ground balls, 29-28. The Catamounts also held a slim advantage in faceoffs, winning 13 of 25. William McMenamin took all 25 faceoffs for Wagner, winning 12, while collecting a team-high six ground balls.

Also scoring goals for the Seahawks were Griffen LeClaire (White Rock, British Columbia/Toronto, Hill Academy), Reed LeClaire (White Rock, British Columbia/Toronto, Hill Academy), Cory Santor (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury), Adam Geiger (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck), Matthew Shute (Suffield, CT/Suffield), and Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep).

Ian MacKay scored three goals, including the game-winner, for Vermont, which came with 1:45 left in the second overtime. Teammate Patrick Clark also recorded a hat trick, while adding two assists in finishing with a game-high five points.

Senior Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) registered 18 saves in goal while Justin Rosenberg had 15 saves for Vermont.

Today's game capped a season-opening stretch of five consecutive home games for the Seahawks who now travel south for a pair of Spring Break road tests. On Tuesday, March 18, the Green & White will face off vs. VMI on the Keydets' Lexington, VA campus at 7:00 pm. Wagner concludes its two-game southern swing by playing at the University of Richmond on Friday, March 21 in a 7:00 pm contest.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Freshman Ian MacKay scored with 1:45 remaining in the second overtime to lift Vermont to an 11-10 victory over Wagner in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday. With the win, Vermont improves to 4-3 while Wagner falls to 1-4 on the season.

The Seahawks sent the game into overtime after scoring with just one second remaining in regulation, as David DeCirce found the back of the net off a feed from Patrick McMenamin.

Patrick Clark led the way for Vermont with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. MacKay added three goals, including the game winner, and Blake Pendleton netted a pair of scores to help pace the Catamounts. Hayden Jenkins collected the helper on the game-winner for the first assist of his career.

Wagner tallied the game's first two goals before Vermont got on the board with 1:55 to play in the first quarter. MacKay tallied his first of the game to cut the deficit to 2-1. Adam Geiger and William McMenamin each added a goal in the final minute to send the Seahawks into the second stanza with a 4-1 lead.

McMenamin tallied another score to begin the second period before Clark and Pendleton picked up a goal apiece to cut Wagner's lead to 5-3 with 9:09 to play in the half. The Seahawks tallied a pair of goals in the final three minutes of the half to take a four-goal advantage into halftime.

Vermont outscored Wagner 4-1 in the third period behind scores from four different players. After a Wagner goal just under two minutes into the quarter, Pendleton, Clark and Nick Bartlett netted a goal each to cut the deficit to 8-6 with 4:05 to play. MacKay notched his second of the game with just 18 seconds left in the period to pull Vermont within one score.
