New Paltz Rallies for One-Goal Victory at Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY A 5-1 run for visiting New Paltz over a 12-minute span in the second half was too much to overcome as the visitors came away with a 14-13 victory over Hartwick's women's lacrosse team on Saturday at Wright Stadium.

'Wick trailed by three, 14-11, with 11:21 left in the contest to pull to within one following tallies from Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) and Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown), but New Paltz won possession and held the ball over the final two and a half minutes to secure the win.

Senior midfielder Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) and Littleton combined for seven of Hartwick's goals. Sisco registered four tallies with Littleton netting three.

Junior Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) scored two goals and dished out a game-high three assists. Rosenberg closed out the game with two goals and one helper.

Hartwick would draw first blood 4:13 into the game on a Jweid goal. New Paltz came back with a pair of tallies, but Sisco and Littleton found the net 46 seconds apart to regain the lead for 'Wick, 3-2.

New Paltz evened the score on the man-advantage, but Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) came right back 17 ticks later to keep Hartwick in front. Rosenberg's first tally of the day gave the Hawks an insurance goal at 11:11.

Carissa Citro trimmed the Hartwick advantage to one at 8:24 and the game remained a one-goal affair for nearly five minutes. Jweid then scored on a free-position shot at 3:32 and Sisco scored 26 seconds later to give the hosts their biggest lead of the day, 7-4.

Citro and Talia Tesler came back with goals with under two minutes left for New Paltz only to have sophomore Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) beat the halftime buzzer to increase the 'Wick margin to two, 8-6, at the break.

New Paltz would out-shoot Hartwick 17-12 in the opening 30 minutes. The visitors would also hold a 19-13 edge in ground balls. 'Wick had a decisive edge in draws in the period, 10-4.

New Paltz came out firing in the second half, as it scored three times inside of three minutes to take its first lead since early in the first half. Sisco tied the match just 35 seconds later and Littleton would put her team ahead just a short time later.

Lianne Valdivia scored consecutive goals at 23:19 and 20:53 to put New Paltz in front to stay. Citro gave her team a two-goal cushion, 12-10, at 20:26 but Sisco trimmed the deficit to one at 16:18 with her fourth goal of the game.

Both teams had opportunities to score over the next four and a half minutes but Mariam Ismail would finally break through for New Paltz at 11:57. Valdivia added another goal after 36 seconds to put New Paltz ahead 14-11 with 11:21 to play.

One minute later Rosenberg finished off a Jweid feed and the game stayed at 14-12 for the next seven minutes. New Paltz would out-shoot Hartwick 4-2 over the span with both Citro and Rosenberg hitting the post for their respective teams. Finally, Rosenberg would set up Littleton for Hartwick's thirteenth goal with 3:23 showing on the clock.

'Wick secured the ensuing draw but a turnover gave possession back to New Paltz. The visitors would play keep-away for the final 2:19, not allowing Hartwick to get a shot at tying the game.

New Paltz (2-0) had advantages in shots (36-22) and ground balls (33-22) to end the game. Hartwick had 18 draws to New Paltz's 10.

Valdivia scored four goals and added one assist for the victors. Citro added three goals and two assists and Tesler registered three scores.
