Vogrig, Murphy, Watts Lead Wingate to Win at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C.- Brevard lost 17-4 while hosting Wingate in a conference match-up at the Tornados Lacrosse Field on March 15. Brevard took an early lead after Alsharif Blackman took the ball to the back of the net at the 13:35 mark of the first quarter. However the Bulldogs quickly recovered to take the lead 3-1 to go into the second quarter.

Wingate shut out Brevard and continued on a seven-goal run to take control of the game in the second quarter. BC was unable to answer their run until the third quarter when freshman, Mathew Dropuljic received an inside pass from teammate Blackman to put in the quick goal and advance Brevard to two goals.

The Bulldog's Ryan Vogrig contributed five goals towards the final score while teammate Chase Watts contributed a hat trick.

Brevard's Robert Thornley and Blair Alexandersen finished with one goal each during the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough to help Brevard gain the win.

Brevard will travel to Mars Hill on March 19th for another South Atlantic Conference match-up beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Meares Stadium.

Brevard, N.C.---Wingate sophomore attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) scored five goals to lead the visiting Bulldogs to a 17-4 South Atlantic Conference triumph over Brevard on Saturday at the Brevard Lacrosse Field. Wingate scored 13 unanswered goals (spanning the first through third quarters) to clinch the victory.

Wingate is 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. Brevard slips to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. The Bulldogs visit NCAA Division II number four Limestone Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Brevard travels to SAC mountain rival Mars Hill Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. contest.

Bulldog freshman attack Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario) had two goals and three assists, while junior midfield Chase Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added three goals and one assist. Ten different Wingate players scored a goal Saturday. For Brevard, freshman midfield Al Blackman (Easton, Pa.) had one goal and one assist.

Blackman put the Tornados on the board 85 seconds into the contest. Wingate responded in a big way, as the Bulldogs posted 13 consecutive goals. Vogrig had four of his five goals in the flurry, while Murphy and Watts posted two goals each. Murphy contributed his three assists during the push.

Watts concluded the run (on a Murphy assist) with 10:05 remaining in the third quarter. The opportunistic Bulldogs converted three of three EMO chances during the flurry. On the afternoon, Wingate outshot Brevard 49-26.

Wingate senior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) won eight of nine face-offs Saturday. Bulldog freshman Jake Pennigar (Durham, N.C.) won six face-offs. Wingate freshman goalie Michael Connor (Stockport, England) picked up the victory with eight saves. He allowed four goals. Brevard junior goalie Andrew Reilly (Delmar, N.Y.) took the loss. He surrendered 17 goals with 13 saves.
