Siena Hangs on to Down Marist in MAAC Opener

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. Red-shirt senior captain Kyle Curry netted a hat trick and junior Conor Prunty scored the game's final and decisive goal with 9:12 remaining as Siena hung on to beat Marist 9-8 in the conference opener for both teams at Siena Turf Field.

The conference's leading scorer by a wide margin, red-shirt junior captain Richie Hurley dished out three assists and finished with a team-high four points for the Saints (4-3, 1-0). Prunty added three points for the MAAC preseason favorites which opened their 19th season in the league by winning for the 35th time in the past 38 regular season conference contests.

Siena scored five straight goals to claim a 5-1 lead midway through the second quarter. Marist (2-4, 0-1) would rally to within 5-3 at the break despite being out-shot 26-10 in the first half. Red Foxes goalie Dave Scarcello made 11 of his 15 saves in the opening stanza to keep the defending MAAC Regular Season Co-Champions close.

Ultimately Marist would make it a four-goal run to tie the game at 5-5 early in the third quarter as the Saints went 18 and a half minutes without a goal. It would be a back and forth affair thereafter between two of the conference favorites.

Joseph Radin and Drew Nesmith tallied back-to-back goals for the Red Foxes to tie the game one final time at 8-8 with 10:30 left in regulation. But Prunty scored the go-ahead goal moments later and red-shirt sophomore goalie Tommy Cordts did the rest. Cordts made six of his 12 saves in the final quarter including one on Nesmith with 15 seconds left to seal the win.

Senior Colin Clive added two goals for the Saints and became just the ninth player in program history to score 100 career goals. Senior Adam Hall had an equally noteworthy game on the defensive end, causing four turnovers and picking up three groundballs for the Saints which have won nine of 10 over Marist.

Radin and Nesmith accounted for all of Marist's scoring, tallying four goals apiece.

The Saints continue their four-game homestand next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against new MAAC member and first-year lacrosse program Monmouth.
