Georgia Tech Stings Gophers for 7th Season Win

ATLANTA, GA- The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets improved to 7-3 on the season with a convincing 13-7 victory over visiting University of Minnesota at Marist High School on Saturday.

The Jackets withstood a furious third quarter run by the Gophers and got four goals from sophomore Chris OBrien (Mira Costa/Manhattan Beach/CA) as they raced away from the visitors to earn their seventh victory of the season.

Early on it was all Tech when Trey Gantt (Lassiter/Marietta, GA) scored on a isolation move 45 seconds into the game followed thirty seconds later by freshman Brian Connolly (Warwick Valley/Warwick,NY). After some back and forth play Conolly would strike again with a great step around rip for the mid quarter 3-0 lead.

Minutes later rookie Holland Frost (Pope/Marietta,GA) would receive a crease feed from Junior Mick Stapleton (Woodstock/Woodstock,GA). The quarter would close minutes later but not before Frost would find OBrien open for a commanding 5-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The second quarter would finally see the Gophers settle in offensively. But the impressive Tech defense was up to the challenge as the close defense would turn away any threat from the visitors from the North. Goalie Matt Sommerfeldt (Pope/Marietta,GA) was tested early, but the close defense was up to the task in turning away any looks Minnesota would have.

Late in the second quarter Stapleton would get a shot past the Gopher goaltender Matt Jorgensen (Creekside/St Johns, FL). But the visitors would not remain scoreless as Benjamin Nash (Mounds View/Mounds View/MN) would score with under a minute in the half to get Minnesota only trailing 6-1 after thirty minutes of play.

The second half began with Jorgensen stuffing Gantt on the crease seconds into the third quarter and essentially giving he Gophers some hope. And it paid off. The Minnesota squad seems sparked and quickly ran off two straight goals from Simon Gondeck (Benilde St Maragret/Wayzata,MN) within one minute of each other to close the game to 6-3 in favor of the Jackets.

After some sloppy play Minnesota would strike again when Teddy OReilly (Minnetonka/Chanhassen/MN) would match Gondeck with two straight goals in a one minute span to make the game a nail biter. With Tech leading 7-5 the Jackets would find themselves in the penalty box and the Gophers would respond when Sean Lee (Mounds View/Shoreview/MN) would make the game a one goal affair.

With momentum on the Gopher side Tech's defense responded with a timely stop, which led to a goal by defenseman Will Byars (Thomas Worthington/Worthington,OH) scored on a feed fro Obrien. With some breathing room the defense stood tall and the offense got back on track. With three minutes left in the third quarter Obrien scored on a feed from Frost to extend Tech's lead to two goals.

Then Stapleton ripped a low shot past Jorgensen with two minutes remaining to close out the quarter with Tech leading 9-6. The Tech defense rallied and played lights out from that point forward. And with the stellar play of the defense the offense got motivated and proceeded to run off two straight goals in a minutes time to extend their lead to 11-6.

The run was highlighted with senior Chris Tynan's (Lakeside/Martinez,GA) faceoff win and fast break goal. the Gophers would score once again on a man up opportunity but Tech would close out the game when OBrien would rip a low to high shot. The Tech defense would close it out from there to secure the win for the Jackets.
