St. Andrews Loses Heartbreaker to Columbia

Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University women's lacrosse team lost a tough conference match-up to the Columbia Koalas on Tuesday falling 23-22 as the Knights celebrated senior day.

Senior attacker Jackie Jones (SR/Springfield, VA) was the standout for the Knights as they unfortunately had to play a man down for the majority of the second half due to numerous injuries to their players. However, Jones was able to carry St. Andrews to a big 12-6 lead with 5 minutes to play in the first half as she scored numerous goals.

But SAU's defense began to tire late in the half and break down as Columbia and their stud, Kendra Blackstock began to win consecutive draw controls and get by the defense and past goalie Blake Forkner (JR/Savannah, GA) as they scored 4 goals in the final few minutes to cut the lead to 12-10.

The Knights and Koalas would trade goals in the early stages of the second half until it was tied at 15 with 20 minutes to go. Then unfortunately attacker Risa Wautel (JR/Baltimore, MD) had to leave after sustaining a head injury as she finished with a goal and 3 ground balls. Columbia would then be a man up for the first time all season and use that to their advantage as they could continue to win the draws and break through the Knights depleted defense on the way to maintaining their slim goal lead throughout.

St. Andrews could only manage to tie the Koalas the rest of the way and never take the lead while Jones' career-high of 10 goals were just not enough in the end as her free position shot dinged off the post giving Columbia (1-11) their first win.

Jones led the way with 10 goals and 2 assists while winning 4 draw controls and collecting 5 ground balls while fellow senior Catherine Lovallo (SR/Old Bridge, NJ) also played well scoring 8 goals with 2 assists and collecting 6 ground balls. Freshman defender Joelle-Sara Prata (FR/New Bedford, MA) then helped pick up the slack on offense by scoring 3 goals, collecting 5 ground balls and forcing 2 turnovers.

Columbia was led by Blackstock's 9 goals and 16 draw control wins while Maddy Pease also scored nine.

St. Andrews falls to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the NWLL and will next make their final regular season road trip this weekend with a game at Tennessee Wesleyan (4-4) on Friday at 4:00 pm before playing Emmanuel College (3-4) on Saturday on a neutral site.
