Belmont Abbey Runs Past Saint Leo for Sixth Win

Belmont Abbey's Shanin Darley scored four goals on four shots-all in the second half, while MacKenzie Miller and Kassie Easter both added three, as the Crusaders improved to 6-1 with a 13-8 win over Saint Leo this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Lions dip to 5-3 in the loss.

Belmont Abbey put the game away early as it scored the first five goals of the game in the opening 16 minutes. Miller scored twice in the run, with Easter (free position shot), Katy Connery and Katelin Glass (free position shot) adding the others.

Saint Leo answered with two straight goals in a span of just 11 seconds, but the Crusaders closed the half on goals from Miller and Easter-the latter coming with 3:28 remaining-to give the Abbey a 7-2 halftime lead.

Both teams scored six goals in the second half, as Darley opened the stanza with her first goal of the game just 1:28 into the period.

After Saint Leo scored two straight, the Abbey responded in kind on two free position shots, coming from Connery and Easter that upped the lead to 10-4.

Two more Abbey goals came after another Lions winner, both coming from Darley, the second at the 8:41 mark, which increased the lead to 12-5.

Saint Leo scored three of the game's last four goals, but Darley's marker with 4:35 left put the game away.

Belmont Abbey outshot Saint Leo 22-18 and was a perfect four for four on free position shots.

Connery added two assists to go along with her two goals. She also had six draw control wins and five ground balls. Easter and Gina Colella both won two draw controls with Easter recording a game-high six ground balls.

Natasha Whitman made eight saves to go along with a pair of caused turnovers. Easter and Lauren DiChiara had two caused turnovers as well.
