RIT Holds on for One-Goal Victory at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting RIT built a 4-2 halftime lead Wednesday and never trailed thereafter, and the Tigers held on for a 6-5 victory over Nazareth in a non-conference women's lacrosse game.

Both teams are 2-2 overall. For the Golden Flyers it was their first home game of the season. Nazareth plays at the University of Rochester Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Senior Amy McIntosh scored two goals for Nazareth, while juniors Brooke Sullivan and Brianna Mancini each scored once along with freshman Leah Marvin, who netted her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Sage Sarkis had two goals and two assists for RIT. Senior Ashleigh Caruso also scored twice.

The game was methodically played and close throughout. After Nazareth closed to within 4-3 on a goal by McIntosh off a feed from freshman Kate Rothrock with 15:30 left, RIT got goals from Sarkis and Caruso just 15 seconds apart to take its largest lead at 6-3 with 12:20 left.

McIntosh's second goal of the game with 7:13 left brought Nazareth within 6-4 and Sullivan scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season just 43 seconds later to pull Nazareth closer still.

Nazareth had chances to tie the game, but a shot by freshman Jamie Martin was saved by RIT goalie Caitlin Conway with less than six minutes left, then ensuing shots by Sullivan and McIntosh sailed wide and high respectively.

RIT used most of the final 2-plus minutes to work time off the clock, but Nazareth regained possession with less than :30 left. Another shot by Martin was saved by Conway with :23 left and Nazareth never got another chance.

RIT had first-half goals from Sarkis, Caruso, freshman Nicole Bingo and sophomore Corinna Mandell to take the early lead. Nazareth stayed close with goals from Mancini and Marvin.

Nazareth had a 19-18 edge in shots, but RIT won the ground ball battle 15-12. Conway made seven saves for the Tigers, while senior Tara Prosak made eight saves for Nazareth.
