No. 12 Pfeiffer Defense Docks Shippensburg

MATTHEWS, N.C. - No. 12 Pfeiffer (6-2) won in convincing fashion as they upended Shippensburg (3-2) 20-5 on a cool Wednesday afternoon at Matthews Sports Complex. The Pfeiffer defense held Shippensburg to seven goals fewer than their average as Rachel McCarthy improves to 6-0 in goal while making six saves.

Katherine Athens came into the game just five caused turnovers shy of breaking the career record. Athens went on to cause four turnovers, tying the record of 94 held by Amanda Smith. Athens will get her chance to break the record at home Friday against St. Leo.

Freshman Stephanie Athens led the Falcons offensively as she scored a team high four goals. Ashleigh Kassab, Cheyenne Green, and Whitney Jaffe each contributed hat tricks of their own.

Sheila Johnson scored a game-high and career-high five goals in the losing effort for the Raiders.

The Falcons struck first on a free position shot by Kassab just 3:09 into the first half. Pfeiffer played stingy defense and continued to bury shot after shot as they scored 11 unanswered goals in the first half, taking the 11-0 lead into the half.

Pfeiffer began the second half much like the first half as Kristi Korn netted her first of two goals just 48 seconds into the half.

It was not until 3:13 into the second half that Shippensburg got on the board with Johnson's first goal of the game.

The Falcons outscored the Raiders 9-5 in the second half, giving Pfeiffer the 20-5 edge; their largest scoring outburst on the season.

Pfeiffer was successful on 19 of 22 clears and Shippensburg finished 10 for 15 in clears.

Stephanie Athens finished with a team-high six ground balls while sister Katherine had a team-high four draw controls.

Pfeiffer will return to action Friday, March 21 as they will play host to St. Leo at 3:00 p.m.
