Boston University Holds off Holy Cross in PL Action

BOSTON, Mass. With the Crusaders trailing 7-2 in the second half, they netted four straight goals but were unable to score the equalizer. The Terriers added an insurance goal as Holy Cross fell to Boston University, 8-6, on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field in Patriot League action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-6 overall (2-1 PL), while the Terriers improve to 2-5 overall (2-0 PL).

Junior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) led the Crusaders with three goals. Becca Church netted three goals for the Terriers, while Jill Horka and Kelsey Marafioti each posted two goals.

After the Terriers scored the first goal of the game, the Crusaders responded with two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Ryan each found the back of the net. BU then netted two straight to take a 3-2 lead to the half.

After the Terriers scored the first four goals of the second half to move out to a 7-2 advantage, the Crusaders responded with four consecutive goals to cut the BU lead to 7-6. Sophomore Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) found the back of the net, while Ryan then scored two goals giving her three for the night for her second hat-trick of the season and the 13th of her career. Freshman Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) then scored off of an assist by Concilio with 8:04 left. But that is as close as the Crusaders would get as Horka scored the last goal of the game with 6:13 remaining for the 8-6 final score.

Boston University outshot Holy Cross, 31-15, while the Terriers picked up 24 ground balls and the Crusaders posted 16. BU secured nine draw controls and the Crusaders tallied seven, while the Terriers went 1-8 on free-position shots and the Crusaders went 2-5.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 22 when they host Patriot League opponent Lafayette at Holy Cross Field at 12:00 p.m.
