Privateers Roll in 18-3 Victory over Lyndon State

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 19, 2014) Maritime picked up its second consecutive win as the Privateers collected an 18-3 victory over the Lyndon State Hornets on Reinhart Field on Wednesday evening.

The Privateers were led by five players who finished the game with multiple goals. Freshman Colin McCoy (Glen Allen, Va./Greenport) led the team with four goals, while senior James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and junior Neil Nembhard (Commack, N.Y./Commack) each collected three goals apiece, freshman Zachary Pace (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) picked up two goals as well. Senior Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) added two goals while leading the team with five assists in the convincing victory.

It didn't take long for Maritime to get on the board as McCoy picked up his first of the game just 55 seconds in off an assist from Pace. McCoy scored again moments later with Grubb collecting the first of his assists on the evening. Pace then added his team-leading 13th goal of the season with 10:40 left in the period.

Grubb collected his first goal of the period on an unassisted marker, followed by a goal from Robert Lalena (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity) grabbing his first tally of the season. Pace picked up his second of the night after taking a pass from sophomore Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun). Grubb added a man-up goal followed by goals by McCoy and Nembhard as the Privateers opened up a 9-0 lead by the end of the first period.

In the second quarter, Nembhard picked up his second of the game exactly one minute into the half. D'Amico and McCoy picked up additional goals followed by one from freshman Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) to give Maritime a 13-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

After picking up one save in the first 30 minutes, sophomore Mike Arnold (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) was given the rest of the night off in favor of Kieran Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) for the start of the third quarter. Lyndon State got on the board with three unanswered tallies to trim the Hornet deficit to 10 goals. Senior Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) picked up a man-up goal to stem the tide coming off a pass from Nembhard to give Maritime an 11-goal lead into the fourth period.

Maritime made another goalie change heading into the fourth quarter as Alex Heim entered the game. Offensively, D'Amico scored the next two goals for the Privateers as the team opened up a 13-goal advantage. Izzo and Nembhard wrapped up the scoring for Maritime in the final three minutes to give the Privateers their third win of the season.

In total, Maritime finished the game with 62 shots, the most in one single game since playing against Manhattanville in 2007 when the team collected 71 shots against the Valiants. Maritime also had 72 ground balls which sets a new modern single-game record dating back to the 2005 season.

The Privateers won 18 of 24 faceoffs including sophomore Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) picked up 15 wins in 19 tries. Defensively Strezenec led the team with three caused turnovers while Grubb was second on the team with a pair of forced giveaways.

In goal, Arnold picked up his second win of the season in 30 minutes of play while collecting one save. Clark allowed three goals and picked up a pair of saves, while Heim wrapped up the game and did not face a shot. Taking the loss was Marcus Bessette despite making 14 saved on the evening.

Maritime (3-5, 0-0 Skyline) will take on SUNYIT in its next game on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field, with the opening faceoff set to take place at 4:00 p.m. Lyndon State (0-5, 0-0 NAC) will travel to Connecticut to take on Albertus Magnus on Thursday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. start in New Haven.
