No. 8 Denison Doubles up No. 18 St. Mary's in Match at JHU

Eighth-ranked Denison remained undefeated in 2014 following an impressive 18-9 victory over No. 18 St. Mary's (Md.) at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins .

The Big Red scored off the game's opening face-off, and less than a minute into the contest they held a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Eric Baumgardner and Blair Farinholt. Denison's quick strike ability was on display all afternoon as they would go on to string together runs of three goals or more, on five occasions.

DU held a 5-2 lead after the opening quarter and would head into the intermission with an 8-3 lead. In the second half, Denison would outscore the Seahawks 10-6 over the final 30 minutes of play. Farinholt led all scorers with four goals and one assist. Justin DeMarchi notched a hat-trick while Luke Walsh and Eddie Vita tallied two goals and two assists, apiece.

Baumgardner dominated face-off's, going 23 for 28 with a game-high 10 ground balls. Senior long stick midfielder Austin Campbell scored one goal, added one assist, and finished with six ground balls while leading the team with three caused turnovers.

For St. Mary's, Conor Jordan and Will Lerch each scored a pair of goals.

Chris Thomas got the start in goal for Denison and played 45 minutes. The sophomore posted five saves while facing 10 shots. Zack Blewett of the Seahawks played all 60 minutes in cage and ended with 12 saves while facing 30 shots on goal.

For the game, Denison outshot St. Mary's 43-18. The Seahawks were flagged for 10 penalties, but DU was just 2 for 9 in man-up, with both EMO goals coming from DeMarchi.

Denison will put its perfect record on the line on Saturday when they take on Dickinson on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Rockville, Md.

Baltimore, Md. Junior midfielder Matt Tarrant (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) dished out a career-best three assists but it wasn't enough as No. 18 St. Mary's dropped an 18-9 decision to No. 8 Denison on a rainy Wednesday evening. The game was played at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.

Tarrant finished the game with four points as he also found the back of the net for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. Fellow classmate Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton) tallied three points on two goals and an assist while sophomore attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) added two scores.

Denison (6-0) started off with a 3-0 lead before senior midfielder Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's) and Jordan put the Seahawks (3-4) on the scoreboard, cutting the deficit to one. The Big Red wrapped up the first period with two more goals for a 5-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes.

DU netted the first two goals of the second quarter before senior attackman Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) notched a man-up goal at 4:36. The Big Red headed into halftime with an 8-3 lead following sophomore midfielder Blair Farinholt's (Richmond, Va.) second goal of the half.

Farinholt led all scorers with four goals and five points while senior attackman Eddie Vita (Coronado, Calif.) and first-year Luke Walsh (Buffalo, N.Y.) each picked up four points (2 goals, 2 assists). Sophomore Justin DeMarchi (Toronto, Ontario) registered a hat trick for Denison as well.

The Big Red outscored St. Mary's, 6-2, in the third stanza, including scoring a pair in eight seconds to begin the second half. Lerch scored the Seahawks' final goal of the third and then assisted on the first score of the final quarter. Scoring was even in the fourth as each side tallied four goals.
