Wheeling Jesuit Runs Past Walsh in ECAC Action

WHEELING, W.Va. Wheeling Jesuit poured in eight goals in the 3rd quarter leading to a defeat of Walsh 17-8 in an ECAC conference match-up on Wednesday.

The Cardinals move to 5-0 in head coach Kevin Dugan's first year at the helm of the WJU program, while the Cavaliers are now 2-1 in just their second season since establishing at team.

Red-shirt sophomore Duston Doudelet drained five goals in the third quarter to lead all scorers, and put plenty of space between the Cardinals and Cavaliers. Also having big nights for WJU were Brian Frank and Bryce Brochu who netted three goals a piece.

The Cardinals came out firing in the 1st quarter, taking three quick goals through Tyler Wickett and a pair from Brian Frank. WJU was also strong in the face offs and controlled the possession early on taking a 4-2 lead heading in the 2nd quarter.

The next period was a defensive stalemate, with only two goals being allowed for either team, coming from the hands of Brochu and Tyler Johnson. WJU took a 6-2 lead heading into halftime, but it was still anyone's game to win.

Doudelet put away any fears the Cardinals were going to drop their first game of the season by netting a goal just 26 seconds into the 2nd half, signaling the home team's intention to put a stamp on the game. A flurry of goals followed over the course of the third quarter with Doudelet putting away four more, Brochu adding a pair, and senior Sean Wright getting on the board for WJU for the last goal of the quarter.

Coach Dugan then looked to his bench to get some valuable playing time for his reserves carrying a 14-3 lead headed into the 4th quarter. The Cavaliers took advantage, and scored five goals before the Cardinals added three more to finish off the game.

WJU returns to the road on Saturday when they will take on Ohio Valley University in an ECAC showdown at 1:00 pm in Vienna, W.Va.
