No. 17 Westminster Loses Shootout with No. 12 BYU

SALT LAKE CITY 17th-ranked Westminster tried to rally, but they couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 19-17 loss to No. 12 Brigham Young on Fri. at Dumke Field.

Leading 5-3 after a goal by Kira Heiden at the 14:06 mark of the first half, Westminster (3-3, 0-1 RMWLL) saw BYU score the next seven goals of the game to lead 10-5 at the 7:20 mark of the period. The Cougars (4-7, 2-1) would eventually hit halftime leading 12-6.

After BYU scored the first two goals of the second half, the Griffins started to mount a comeback. Heiden would score four times during a 7-2 run by Westminster that got the game back to 16-13 with 11:35 to play. After the teams traded goals, Abby Sebastian and Maggie HerrNeckar scored for the Griffins to make it 18-16 Cougars with 5:53 to play. Each team would add another goal down the stretch to seal the BYU victory.

Westminster finished the game with a 41-35 edge in shot attempts and they put 30 of those on cage. Heiden and Dana Barraco each finished with five goals and two assists to lead the Griffins with seven points apiece. Maddie Haynes led the team with 12 shots and five draw controls. Makenzie Hekking took the loss in goal despite making 11 saves.

Heather Haight led the Cougars with nine goals on 14 shots. Sierra Armstrong made 13 saves in cage for the win.

Westminster will now travel to Boulder, Colo. for a pair of games at the Colorado Tournament. They open with Michigan Club on March 28.
