Purple Knights Down Saint Rose with Big Third Quarter

ALBANY, N.Y. - Saint Michael's scored the final five goals of the third quarter to break open a one-goal game during an 11-8 victory at Saint Rose on Saturday at Sullivan Field. The Purple Knights capped a four-game road swing and improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights slipped to 1-6 and 1-3.

Senior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) notched a hat trick and an assist for the visitors, while classmate Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) scored three times and went 4 for 8 on face-offs. First-year Tom Fitzgerald (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had a goal and two assists, while seniors Connor Glackin (Mission Viejo, Calif./Saint Anthony's) and Asa Sargent (Ripton, Vt./Middlebury Union), sophomore Daegan Goodman (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) and first-year Ben Overslaugh (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) all scored once. Goodman's goal was his first as a collegian. Senior Chris Casserly (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) was 10 of 15 on face-offs with eight ground balls, and sophomore T.J. Bicknell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made seven saves.

Junior Evan Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) led Saint Rose with three goals and an assist, while classmate Colin Sorber (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga Central) posted two markers and a helper. Junior Ryan McFee (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) won four of his eight face-offs and scored once, and first-year Joe Shapiro (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) had 14 stops.

Neither team scored during the opening quarter, as the visitors held a 7-1 edge in shots. Glackin broke the stalemate 40 seconds into the second period, converting a pass from Antolino, before the teams later combined for three goals during a 2:29 stretch. Sargent scored off a Fitzgerald feed with 10:18 remaining, but Helming tallied on a man advantage at 8:36. After Saint Michael's lost the ensuing face-off, sophomore Lawrence Dee (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) disrupted a Saint Rose clearing attempt, causing a turnover before ultimately finding Fitzgerald, who made it 3-1 at 7:49. That was the same score at halftime.

Saint Michael's pulled away with six goals in the third quarter. After Overslaugh produced a three-goal lead 1:01 into the period, the Golden Knights scored twice in 41 seconds to cut their deficit to 4-3 by 11:09. From there, the Purple Knights scored five straight tallies to end the stanza, including three from Quenneville in a 6:05 stretch. Goodman added his first career goal with 1:00 remaining to make it 9-3 heading into the fourth.

Saint Rose scored five of the seven goals in the final period. After Antolino potted his second marker of the stanza to give Saint Michael's an 11-6 advantage with 6:54 left, Helming scored twice in 1:37 to make it 11-8 with 3:17 remaining. However, Casserly won the ensuing draw, and the Purple Knights maintained possession for nearly a minute before a penalty was assessed to the hosts, who never fired another shot.

The Purple Knights return home for the first time since March 1 when they host Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
