Assumption Drops Northeast-10 Battle to Saint Anselm

Worcester, Mass. (March 22) -- On Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium, Assumption dropped a back-and-forth 9-5 final to visiting Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 play. Assumption is currently ranked No. 5 in this week's New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division II Poll.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play as the Hawks took the 1-0 edge just 1:08 in as Geoff Kennedy scored off an assist from Ryan Mee. Kennedy scored a trio of goals in the first half, including his sixth of the season with 5:21 left in the first for a 2-0 Hawks edge. Senior Jake Mallinson accounted for the third goal of the opening period as his tally was assisted on by senior Andrew Messner for a 3-0 edge after one quarter.

Kennedy completed the first-half hat trick just 3:35 into the second quarter off another Mee assist. The Hounds got on the board just eight seconds later off the ensuing faceoff as junior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) converted his 23rd goal of the season to cut the lead down to 4-1.

It was all Assumption over the rest of the second and into the third as the Hounds put together a 4-0 run to tie the game early in the third. Junior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) made it a 4-2 halftime margin on his third goal of the season as Smith assisted on the score. Shots on goal in the first half were 10-7 in favor of Saint Anselm, while the Hounds were 0 for 4 on man-up chances over the first 30 minutes.

Assumption picked up where it left off to start the third as junior Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) tallied his third goal of the season, off an assist from junior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River). With 9:01 left in the period, Smith tallied his league-leading 24th goal of the year to tie the game for the first time at 4-4.

The Hawks answered with a pair of goals over the remainder of the third quarter to stake Saint Anselm to a 6-4 advantage heading to the fourth. Mallinson tallied an unassisted score just 20 seconds after the Hounds tied the game and added to that lead with 6:49 left as junior James Peters took an assist from Mallinson for the 6-4 margin. After nearly 18 minutes of scoreless play, sophomore Ben Warren opened the fourth-quarter scoring with 5:35 left in the game as Mee assisted on his third goal of the contest.

Saint Anselm extended its scoring run to 4-0 with 4:21 left after the third goal of the season by Peters for the 8-4 lead. Assumption's Smith ended the Hawks run on with his third goal of the game off the league-leading 12th assist of the year from Curran. Mee closed out the scoring with 1:41 left for the Penmen as the Hounds dropped the eventual 9-5 final.

Junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 10 saves in the loss, while sophomore James O'Neill had 11 stops to pick up his second victory of the season.

Smith led the Hounds with three goals and one assist, while Curran posted a pair of assists and Gersbeck added one goal and one assist.

Kennedy posted the hat trick to lead the Hawks, along with two goals and an assist from Mallinson and a goal and three assists by Mee.

For the game, Assumption held a 41-30 edge in shots and forced 15 Saint Anselm turnovers. The Hounds held an 11-7 edge in faceoffs won, as sophomore Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) won all 11 of them. Assumption was also very efficient in clear attempts as the Hounds converted 15 of 16, while also holding the Penmen to just 16 for 23 on clears.
