Hartwick Drops Empire 8 Opener to Stevens

ONEONTA, NY- Hartwick kept pace with visiting Stevens and only trailed by two goals late in the second half but the Ducks scored three straight the end the game to come away with a 14-9 victory on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The loss evens Wick's overall record at 4-4 and puts it at 0-1 in the Empire 8. The Ducks improve to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the E8.

The Hawks took an early 2-0 lead on their guests with goals from Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) and Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs). The Ducks answered with three straight scores to go up 3-2 with 19:37 left to play in the first half.

Ference fought through traffic and scored to tie the game at 3-all at 18:34. The Hawks would regain the lead on Lauren Rosenberg's (Smithtown, NY/Commack) 20th tally of the season with 16:25 remaining in the half.

The two teams exchanged goals with 'Wick remaining ahead by one goal, 5-4, at 12:42. The Ducks ended the period on a 3-0 run to go up 7-5 at halftime.

Stevens continued its momentum into the early moments of the second half with two goals from Erika Wilcox to push its advantage up to 9-5 at 26:48. 'Wick would rally with three goals in a row and trailed 9-8 at 20:19.

The Ducks tacked on two free position goals from Kathleen Kalbian to move up 11-8 at 14:43. A yellow card assessed to Wilcox put Hartwick in a man-up opportunity. The Hawks took advantage of the situation as Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) converted on a free position shot to get 'Wick to within two scores of tying the contest up, 11-9, with 8:47 left on the clock. Stevens, however, pulled away in the end with a 3-0 run to come up with the win.

Ference and Rosenberg led Hartwick offensively with three goals each. Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick), Jweid, and Meg Luce all chipped in one goal. Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) dished out three assists. Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) stopped 10 shots in goal for the Hawks.

Wilcox, Kara Rafferty, and Caitlyn Hughes all had hat tricks for the Ducks. Kalbian had two scores. Jaime Mastrogiacomo, Mariel Haubrich, and Caroline DeLuca all contributed one goal each.

The Ducks led in shots, 30-16, and in draw controls, 18-7. Stevens had a narrow advantage in groundballs, 19-18. Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) picked up a team-high four groundballs on the day.

The Hawks converted 3 of 7 free-position shots. Stevens was good on 4 of 10 opportunities.

'Wick returns to Wright Stadium on Wednesday when its host Keuka in non-conference action. Game time will be at 4:30 p.m.
