Utica Scores Final Five to Rally Past Hartwick

UTICA, NY- Hartwick took a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter but host Utica outscored the Hawks 5-0 in the final frame to win 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at Charles Gaetano Stadium. The loss brings 'Wick's record to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8 while the Pioneers improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the E8.

It was a tie game after the first quarter of play. The Hawks had a 2-0 lead before UC added two scores to knot the contest up.

The two teams traded goals in the first few minutes of the second stanza. The Pioneers went ahead 4-3 on a goal from Scott Baron at 10:01. 'Wick would end the period on a 4-1 run to go into halftime with a 7-5 lead.

The third quarter was scoreless despite Utica leading in shots 7-5. The Hawks had three extra-man opportunities that it could not convert as UC held 'Wick at bay.

In the fourth quarter, a slashing penalty on Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) gave the Pioneers the extra man and they took advantage as Trent Jacobs would find Christian Reiller for the score at 13:51. Utica tied the game up on Ross Cree's goal at 9:09 and took the lead for good on Reiller's second tally of the day at 8:28. Two goals from Joe Schoen completed the scoring in the contest.

The Hawks got a pair of goals from Petillo, Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North), and Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset). Gropper and Vaglica also had one assist as did Cody Ciolino (Newconset, NY/Sachem North). Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) stopped 20 shots in goal.

Utica was led by Reiller and Schoen's two goals. Trent Jacobs, Baron, Cree, Zack Stevenson, Adam Zielenski, and Corey Thompson all tallied one score apiece. Andrew DiOrio started in goal and stopped six shots. Cory Spisak relieved him and played the final 1:24 without recording a save.

UC held a large advantage in shots, 56-28. The Pioneers led 27-11 in ground balls.

The Hawks committed 25 turnovers to 10 for the Pioneers. 'Wick was flagged for five penalties to 10 fouls for UC.

Hartwick returns home to face King's College of Pennsylvania in a non-league match-up on Tuesday afternoon. Game time from Wright Stadium will be at 4:00 p.m.
