Wings Hang on to Edge Rock

Philadelphia, PA Keeping the playoff hunt alive, the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) defeated the Toronto Rock 14-13 to even the season series (1-1) on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Center.

"We have a long way to," said Head Coach Blane Harrison. "One win doesn't solve all of our woes, but it is nice to snap the losing streak."

Philadelphia and Toronto played a back-and-forth opening quarter with four different lead changes. A total of eight goals were scored between both teams. Philadelphia carried the edge moving to the second quarter with a 5-3 lead. Forward Kevin Crowley recorded two first quarter goals.

Toronto countered to open the minutes of quarter two. The Rock went on a 4-0 scoring run to grab a 7-5 lead over the Wings. Philadelphia answered with a 6-1 scoring run of their own to repossess the lead. Forward Kevin Crowley notched a first half hat trick (four goals, two assists) and had plenty of scoring support from fellow Wings. Philadelphia led 11-8 through two quarters.

Toronto executed a well-rounded attack to claim the third quarter. The Rock outscored the Wings 4-1 to tie the game at 12-12 heading to the final frame. Rock Forward Garrett Billings completed a hat trick of his own.

The final fifteen minutes were a gut-wrenching battle as both teams dug in for a crucial win. Philadelphia claimed an early lead with two goals to go ahead 14-12. Toronto marched back with their thirteenth goal of the night with less than six minutes to go. Defense was the key for the final minutes as Philadelphia came up with multiple stops to hang on for their second win at home this season.

"We stuck to our game plan and were able to emerge on the positive side in this one," said Harrison. "We had to make one little change, which ended up working with the goalie swap to give [Evan] Kirk a chance to regroup."

The trio of Forwards Kevin Crowley, Kyle Buchanan, and Tracey Kelusky came up big for the Wings as they attributed for 10 of the team's 14 goals and almost half (15) of the team's 33 total points. Crowley recorded six goals and his eighth multi-goal game of the season.

Toronto had three players with hat tricks of their own. Forwards Josh Sanderson, Rob Hellyer and Garrett Billings notched three goals each and amounted 21 of the team's 36 total points.

The Wings travel west to Colorado next week as they battle the Colorado Mammoth in a cross-conference showdown at the Pepsi Center on Saturday, March 29 at 9:00 p.m. Philadelphia makes their way back home to host the Calgary Roughnecks on Friday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Wells Fargo Center.

PHILADELPHIA, PA Toronto Rock (5-8) were defeated 14-13 by the Philadelphia Wings (4-9) at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night. The road loss drops the Rock's record to 1-6 away from Air Canada Centre.

The two teams traded goals throughout the first 10 minutes of the opening quarter however the Rock never led. Philadelphia's Kyle Buchanan scored with just under 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter to give the Wings their first two-goal lead and that's how the first frame ended with the Wings up 5-3.

The Rock went on a four-goal run to take their first lead of the game, 7-5 early in the 2nd quarter. Philadelphia wasn't held down for long as they answered with a 3-goal run of their own to regain the lead 8-7. Toronto tied things up again but the Wings edged back ahead with just just over 3 minutes left to go in the half. Philadelphia scored another pair of goals to lead 11-8 at the half.
