Newberry Coasts to Victory at Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Newberry sophomore Jessica Baxtrom and senior KerriAnn Barlage each notched five goals and two assists as the Wolves coasted to a 19-7 victory over Young Harris at the Young Harris Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Newberry (4-7) took an early 2-0 lead over Young Harris (1-11) on goals from Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) and sophomore Noelle Allen (Lawrenceville, Ga.). After the Mountain Lions netted a goal of their own, Newberry rattled off nine-straight goals.

The Wolves' third goal of the day came from a free-position opportunity by junior Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.), followed by a second by Allen. Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.) assisted on Allen's second goal of the day, before Allen returned the favor with an assist on Barlage's first of the day.

Baxtrom scored the eventual game winner with 18:47 left in the first period.

The first half saw Baxtrom and Allen net four goals each. As a team the Wolves scored four from free-position shots in the first period.

Newberry outscored Young Harris 15-4 in the opening period, before a low scoring second half saw the Wolves notch a 4-3 advantage.

In addition to the trio of five goal scoring Wolves, Newberry received goals from redshirt-freshman Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.), sophomore Carly Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and juniors Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) and Thomas.

Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) recorded nine saves in the victory.

The Wolves outdid the Mountain Lions 14-10 in ground balls and 17-11 on draw controls.

Individually, Thomas dominated the draw circle with 12 draw controls. Thomas led the Wolves with three ground balls on the evening, while six Wolves recorded a single caused turnover.

The Wolves return home Friday for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Meredith Avenging Angels.
