Ulrich's Goal Gives Catawba 2OT Victory Over Queens

SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Tyler Ulrich (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) scored just over a minute into the second overtime to lift host Catawba to a 9-8 win over Queens in SAC action on Monday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

The Catawba Indians improve to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Royals fall to 5-4 and 2-1. It marked the fifth straight overtime win for Catawba dating back to the end of last season.

Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence/Gettysburg) had an initial shot saved by Queens goalie Eric Dolan, but the rebound popped up in the air where Ulrich was able to catch it and score. The tally came at the 2:55 mark of the second overtime period.

Ulrich finished the game with two goals and two assists. John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington) scored three goals for the Indians. Casey Hock had two goals and an assist for Queens. Garrett Chan and Evan Farkis also had two goals.

Queens rallied from a 6-4 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. Farkas and Hock scored 14 seconds apart to being the Royals even with 12:04 left. The teams were tied 7-7 entering the final two minutes when Scheich gave Catawba the lead with 1:40 to go. Hock was able to answer with 1:03 remaining to force overtime.

The Royals went up 2-0 in the first quarter before Catawba scored twice in the final minute of the quarter to tie the game. The teams traded goals in the second quarter to go the break tied at 3-3. Catawba scored the final three goals of the third quarter to grab the 6-4 lead.

The Indians held a 45-34 edge in shots with Queens holding a 34-31 edge in ground balls. Catawba won 11 of the 21 face-offs, including a key win from Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air) to start the second overtime.

Dolan made 19 saves for Queens. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence/Stevenson) had a dozen saves for Catawba.

Catawba, who has now won nine of its last 10 overtime games since 2011, will travel to Pfeiffer to face the seventh-ranked Falcons on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

SALISBURY, N.C. Queens took their first conference loss of the season this afternoon falling 9-8 to Catawba in double overtime. Queens' record falls to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Indians improve to 4-1 in the league and 6-4 on the year.

Garret Chan, Casey Hock and Evan Farkas each scored two goals to lead Queens' scoring efforts, while Matthew Michael chipped in with two assists. Patrick Thomas led in ground balls with six, while Patrick Murphy and Tim Cloud notched two caused turnovers apiece. Kenneth Stryker when 10 for 21 at the face-off.

Trailing the Indians 6-4 at the start of the fourth quarter, Queens was able to tie the game at 6-6 with two goals scored within 14 seconds of each other. The two teams then traded goals for the remainder of play with Hock putting the ball in the back of the net with 1:03 to play forcing the game into overtime.

The Royals got a shot off with 2:47 to play in the first overtime period, but it was turned away by Catawba's keeper. Another shot from Michael with one second on the clock would be saved as well sending the game into a second overtime period.

The Indians won the opening face-off in the period and raced down to set up their offense. They fired a shot at Queens' goalkeeper, Eric Dolan, which he was able to turn away from the net. However, Tyler Ulrich of the Indians was able to collect the rebound off the shot and quickly fire another one that found the back of the net with 2:55 to play ending the game.

The Royals and the Indians matched each other goal for goal in the opening half to head into the locker room tied at 3-3.

Queens was outshot 45-34, but won the battle for ground balls 34-31. Dolan finished the game with 19 saves.

John Scheich led Catawba with a hat trick, while Ulrich finished with two goals and two assists. Pete Wesselman played in goal for the Indians totaling 12 saves.

Queens is back at home against Mars Hill on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
