Widener Breezes Past Alvernia in Commonwealth Action

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2014) - Widener (3-3, 1-0) used a 5-goal second quarter to open up an 8-1 lead at halftime en route to a 19-3 win over Alvernia (2-7, 0-1) Monday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Alvernia.

The Crusaders defense looked solid through the first quarter holding the Pride off the board until midway through the quarter when Nate Feldman scored unassisted for a 1-0 lead. The Pride tacked on two more goals for a 3-0 lead after one quarter.

Alvernia senior Rick Reid (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) finished a brilliant feed from Colin Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) for the first goal of the second quarter, but Widener responded with five straight to take an 8-1 lead at the break.

The Crusaders were again able to open the scoring in the third quarter when Benjamin Manning (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown) scored off the opening faceoff on a feed from Alex Evans (Reading, Pa./Exeter), but once again the Pride owned the quarter scoring six in a row for a commanding 14-2 lead.

Alvernia got the first goal of the fourth quarter on the 18th of the season by Gallagher assisted by Mallory Pierre (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia). Widener finished out with five goals for the 19-3 final.

Brandon Weaver (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) made a dozen saves in net for the Crusaders who return to action Saturday when they hosts Lycoming.
