Assumption Drops Northeast-10 Match at Franklin Pierce

Rindge, N.H. (March 25) -- On Tuesday afternoon, Assumption dropped an 11-5 final at Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Sodexo Field.

The Ravens got off to a fast start as the hosts held a 3-1 advantage after the opening quarter of play. Junior Erik Kelly got FPU on the board with 11:28 left in the first, followed by a score from junior Connor Defemia for a 2-0 edge with 6:53 on the clock. The Ravens kept up the offensive pressure as the first period wound down as senior Alex Connolly tallied his third goal of season and Franklin Pierce led 3-0.

Off the ensuing faceoff, Assumption junior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scored his league-leading 26th goal of the season with just 57 seconds remaining in the first for a 3-1 margin. The Hounds kept up the push to open the second quarter as juniors Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) each scored within the first 3:02 of the period to tie the game at 3-3. Gersbeck got things started just 48 seconds into the quarter with his fourth goal of the season, followed by the tying goal from Casey off an assist from junior Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield).

The game of scoring runs continued over the rest of first half as it was the Ravens who closed the period on a 4-0 run to seize a 7-3 lead at the halftime break. Junior Eddie Noonan put FPU in front for good at 4-3 with 6:43 left in the second, followed by the ninth goal of the season by sophomore Casey Burnett at the 3:58 mark. After Kevin Dargin scored his first just 53 seconds later, the Ravens closed out the first-half scoring with 17 seconds on the clock off a goal from Brendan Caldeira that was assisted on by Noonan.

Franklin Pierce held a 12-6 advantage in first-half shots on goal, while the teams were even in faceoffs at 6-6 thru the first 30 minutes. Neither team could take advantage of man-up opportunities as each squad was 0 for 4.

The Ravens continued what would end up as a 6-0 scoring run late in the third quarter on a second goal by Caldeira, followed by a man-up score from Kelly for a 9-3 lead with 2:30 left in the period. The Hounds closed the third with a goal from Gersbeck with 1:18 left, followed by the fifth goal of the season by sophomore Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) to cut the lead to 9-5 just 1:09 into the fourth quarter. Caldeira completed the hat trick for the Ravens on a man-up goal with 7:14 left, followed by the second goal of the game from Noonan with 28 seconds remaining to account for the 11-5 final.

Junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made five saves in the start as he picked up the loss, while junior Don Denman had 11 stops while picking up the victory. Assumption freshman Matt Comerford (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) played the second half, making five saves.

Gersbeck led the Hounds with two goals and one assist, while junior Dan Donovan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) had a team-high four caused turnovers. Noonan led the Ravens with two goals and two assists, along with three goals and one assist by Caldeira.

The Ravens held a 21-16 edge in shots on goal, along with a narrow 29-28 advantage in ground balls. Both teams were efficient in clear attempts as they finished a combined 30 for 37 in the game. Assumption ended up with the 12-8 edge in faceoffs, including 6-2 in the second half as sophomore Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) continued his strong play.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast-10, while the Ravens improve to 4-2 overall and are an even 2-2 in league play.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 29th as the Hounds host Saint Michael's College for a 2:00 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
