Late Rally Lifts Hartwick to Victory over King's

ONEONTA, NY- Hartwick trailed 9-8 midway through the fourth quarter but scored four straight times to come away with a 12-9 win over King's on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The win gives Hartwick a record of 2-4 while the Monarchs fall to 4-4.

The Monarchs struck first at 13:38 of the first period on a goal from Billy McCullough. Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) evened it for 'Wick on a man-up goal at 5:13 with an assist from Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North). Vaglica would score one of his own at 1:49 to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage after one quarter of play.

King's responded in the second quarter with two scores to move ahead 3-2 at 9:37. The Hawks regained the lead on two man-up goals, one from Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset), and the other from Vaglica to go into halftime ahead 4-3.

Hartwick took its late first half momentum into the third quarter as Simmons tallied his second goal of the afternoon just 46 seconds into the period and assisted Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Plesantville) on the next score at 12:27 to put 'Wick ahead 6-3. The Monarchs got one back on Kevin Sweeney's goal but Vaglica would score unassisted to give the Hawks a 7-4 lead at 4:21.

The Monarchs tacked one two goals to trail 7-6 at 2:46. Vaglica's goal with 1:38 remaining in the third frame made it 8-6 but Kyle Wilk's score for King's made it 8-7 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Monarchs tied the contest up 48 seconds into the fourth period and then went ahead 9-8 at 11:21 on an unassisted goal by Pat Bonnot. The score remained that way for 3:23 until Brown tallied his second goal of the day to even the game at 9-all.

Hartwick won the ensuing faceoff. Gropper got a shot off that deflected off the stick of Monarch goalie Derek Bowman and off of Connor Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) with the ball getting past Bowman for the surprising goal to give 'Wick a 10-9 lead at 6:37. Hartwick added scores from Gropper and Simmons while goalie Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) came up with two big saves to preserve the Hawks' win.

Vaglica led the way for Hartwick with four goals and also assisted on two others. Simmons scored three times and added two assists. Gropper and Brown had a pair of scores. Long had one goal. Rourke turned away 12 shots in the cage.

Sweeney and McCullough had two goals each to lead the Monarchs. AJ Bungert, Mike O'Brien, Pat Bonnot, Wilk, and Evan Lawshe all scored once. Kieran McMahon had four helpers while Sweeney added one. Bowman had eight saves in goal.

The Hawks had a small lead in shots, 35-33, and in ground balls, 36-35. Shane Latsko (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) scooped up a team-high eight groundballs while winning 17 out of 25 face-offs. Rourke and Fred Golini (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) both had four ground balls.

The Hawks were effective on the extra-man opportunity as they went 3 for 7. The 'Wick defense killed off all six man-up situations for King's.

Hartwick returns to Empire 8 play on Saturday when it plays host to St. John Fisher on Saturday. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
