Chestnut Hill Takes Control to Beat Hood in AWCCs
BALTIMORE – Chestnut Hill College outshot Hood College, 22-12, in the second half and used a 7-2 scoring run over 15 minutes in the second half of a 17-11 win Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference Semifinals at College of Notre Dame of Maryland's Alumnae Field.
The Griffins (4-10), which entered the game as the No. 3 seed, advanced to the AWCC Championship Game and will play No. 1 seed and host Notre Dame, on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at 12 noon.
Hood (3-11) took a 1-0 lead, but it would be the No. 2 seeds only advantage of the game. The teams traded ties for much of the first half before Chestnut Hill scored three-straight goals over eight minutes, taking a 7-4 lead on a goal with 8:42 before the half by freshman attacker Katie Donovan (Conshohocken, Pa./Archbishop Carroll High School).
The Blazers pulled to within 9-8 with 20:29 left in the game on a goal by junior midfielder Laurie Burrier (Rocky Ridge, Md./Catoctin High School).
Chestnut Hill, however, would score seven of the next nine goals to build an advantage that would not be overcome. Junior midfielder Morgan Nichols (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright High School) scored two of her team-high tying four goals during the run.
Nichols, Donovan and freshman attacker Stephanie Carlyle (Essex, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School) led Chestnut Hill with four goals.
Hood freshman attacker Liz Rakowski (Baltimore, Md./Parkville High School) led all players with six.
