Merchant Marine Sinks the Valiants

KING'S POINT, N.Y. The Manhattanville offense got off to a cold start on Wednesday, falling to the Merchant Marine Academy by a final score of 15-3. The Mariners offense was unaffected by the 39 degree temperature scoring 12 goals in the first half, establishing a lead that proved to be insurmountable for the Valiants.

The Merchant Marine offense was firing on all cylinders from the opening faceoff, outshooting the Valiants 19 to five in the first quarter. After scoring four goals in the first quarter the Mariners tallied eight more in the second quarter thanks in large part to midfielders Phil Walker (four goals) and Troy Smith (two goals) and senior attacker Brett Crawford who, after scoring two goals in the second quarter, finished the hat trick with just 5:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.

It was an off night in net for freshman goaltender Ian Reill (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) as he registered five saves in the first half, ending the game with seven saves on 22 shots. Manhattanville's offense began clicking too late. After registering only five shots in the first three quarters, scored three goals in less than three minutes, thanks to goals from freshmen Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Connor Daly (Rockville Center, N.Y./South Side), as well as junior midfielder Jack Polak (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow).

Murray's ninth goal of the season came with only 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Along with his assist on Daly's goal, Murray has now scored a point in seven straight games for Manhattanville. Freshman Connor Daly (Rockville Center, N.Y./South Side) is heating up as well as he picked up his third goal in the last four games.

Despite today's loss, the Valiants now have a clean sheet as conference play is set to begin next Wednesday. The Valiants now have a week off to prepare for their match-up against DeSales University on Wednesday, April 2.
