Cyclones Edged by FDU-Florham

WASHINGTON, N.J. - Centenary was defeated 12-8 by FDU-Florham in non-conference action Wednesday night at Warren Hills High School.

The Cyclones (2-4) received goals from juniors Joshua Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Nick Perkalis (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) during the opening six minutes to take a two-goal lead, but the Red Devils (4-4) scored the game's next four goals.

Sophomore Anthony Biango's (Highland Lakes, N.J./Vernon Twp.) second-quarter goal ignited a string of three consecutive goals for the Cyclones midway through the period. Biango found the back of the net two minutes later, knotting the game 6-6; however, FDU-Florham notched a pair of tallies during the final 3:07 to take the lead at the half.

The Red Devils scored three of the first four goals during the second half before Biango netted his third score, bringing Centenary within three early in the fourth quarter.

Matt Melnik fired in an insurance goal with 5:26 to play and the Red Devils held Centenary off the board for the remainder of the game to secure the victory.

Biango also dished out one assist for a four-point game, while sophomore Kenton Gottshall (Toms Rivers, N.J./Toms River East) scored twice.

Sophomores Alex Malecki (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and Kevin Switzer (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) split time in net. Malecki made 12 first-half saves, while Switzer blocked seven shots during the final 30 minutes.

Dan Minich paced the Red Devil offense with two goals and three assists and Jerry Yacotski made five saves in net.

Centenary hosts Kean Saturday at 1:00 pm at Warren Hills High School.
