Huskies Knock off the Mariners

CASTINE, Maine -- Southern Maine netted five-straight shots to end the first half which sparked a 12-9 win over Maine Maritime in a non-conference game Thursday. The Huskies won their first game this season and improved to 1-5, while the Mariners fell to 1-4.

Nicholas Betti paced the Mariners with three goals and added an assist. Bronson Guimond and Brady Harrison each scored twice and Justin Lovel and Peter Moore found the back of the net once. Nick Snelling recorded a game-high two assists for Maine Maritime and Gavin Cote (1 save) and James Wilgus (7 saves) combined to stop eight shots.

Austin Watts tallied three goals for USM and Seth Wing, Burleigh Desjardins and Dylan Kenney each netted two shots. Keegan Smith, Tyler Jamison and Luke Johnas found the back of the net once for Huskies. Ryan Jurgelevich stopped 11 shots to earn the win in goal.

The Mariners opened the game with a 1-0 lead when Snelling found Harrison for a man-up score. Desjardins evened the game with a score at 1:39 before Betti found Guimond a minute later to give MMA a 2-1 lead. The Huskies quickly answered to even the game 28 seconds later when Johnas scored unassisted.

Watts put USM ahead 3-2 early in the second quarter before Lovely, Guimond and Betti scored consecutive goals to give the Mariners a 5-3 lead with 6:14 left before halftime. The Huskies responded with five-straight scores to lead 8-5 at halftime.

Betti scored twice in the third and Watts and Kenney once each to make 10-7. The teams traded scores again in the fourth with Watts and Wing finding the net for USM and Harrison and Moore netting shots for the Mariners.

The Mariners fired 17 more shots (49-32), scooped more ground balls (51-36) and more extra-man opportunities (10-5) and the Huskies won the face-off battle (13-12).

Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday, 2:00 p.m., hosting Lyndon State.

The win was the first of the season for the Huskies after five consecutive losses and improved their record to 1-5. The Mariners fell to 1-4 with the loss.

Junior Burleigh Desjardins (Brunswick, Maine), senior Dylan Kenney (Portland, Maine) and rookie Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) added two goals apiece for the Huskies. Wing also had an assist. Freshman Keegan Smith (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) chipped in a goal and an assist.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) picked up his first collegiate win making 11 saves.

Junior Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Tabor Academy) paced the Mariners with three goals and an assist. Junior Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) added two goals and an assist, and classmate Brady Harrison (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) had two goals.

Senior Gavin Cote (Arundel, Maine/Biddeford) started in goal for the Mariners and made one save before giving way to sophomore James Wilgus (Phippsburg, Maine/Brunswick) early in the second quarter. Wilgus had nine saves over the final 44:22.

The key stretch in the game came late in the second quarter when the Huskies scored five straight goals to erase a two-goal deficit and take an 8-5 advantage into the halftime break. Desjardins ignited the outburst with his second goal of the game with 5:17 remaining. Smith, Kenney and Wing blitzed the Mariners for three goals in a span of 46 seconds to give the Huskies a 7-5 lead. Freshman Tyler Jamison (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) added the final goal with just four ticks remaining before halftime.
