No. 16 Westminster Knocks off No. 14 Cal Poly

SALT LAKE CITY 16th-ranked Westminster beat a ranked opponent for the second-straight outing in a 9-4 win over No. 14 Cal Poly on Friday evening at Dumke Field.

Westminster (7-3) got on the board just 23 seconds into the action when Josh Holland found Collin Madsen for his 17th goal of the season. Cal Poly (5-3) answered with goals from Chris Nespor and Tim Albo to take a 2-1 lead with 4:22 on the first quarter clock.

The Griffins then scored four-straight goals and held the visitors without a goal for over 20 minutes. Dylan Check scored twice during the Griffins run to give him six goals on the season. Madsen would also score during the stretch and he assisted on the goal from Kyle Postler.

Cal Poly used a strike from Zach Jones at the 13:51 mark of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 6-4. Westminster responded with the next three goals, including Postler's second on the game just 32 seconds later. Kevin Gee would score at the 9:43 mark of the fourth with Dominic Conti adding the final goal with 9:30 to play.

Westminster finished the game with 45 shots to only 28 from the Mustangs. The Griffins put 24 of those attempts on goal while also posting a 34-23 advantage in ground balls. Westminster went 13 of 17 in face-offs and they were successful on 18 of 20 clearing attempts.

Poster led all players in the game with four points as he added two assists to those two goals. Holland would take a season-high 11 shots with Gee ripping eight attempts. Eric Crosby picked up a team-best seven ground balls while Jake Berard won 12 of the 15 face-offs he took with five ground balls. Spencer Huso caused a season-high four turnovers.

Chris Burckle was solid in cage for the Griffins with 13 saves and only four goals allowed. This is his fifth double-digit save performance and second-straight. The .765 save percentage is the second-highest recorded by Burckle this season.

Tim Albo and Michael Paul would add the other two goals for Cal Poly. The Mustangs would force 19 turnovers in the game with Nespor causing four of them. Sean Pihl made 15 saves in cage.

The Griffins will next be in action on April 5 when they welcome in-state rival Utah to Dumke Field for Senior Day. The final regular season home game of the season for the Griffins will begin at 4:00 p.m. MDT.
