Wolves Fall to the Avenging Angels

NEWBERRY - Senior KerriAnn Barlage and sophomore Noelle Allen scored four goals each in the Wolves' 21-9 loss to the Meredith Avenging Angels on Friday night at Setzler Field.

Meredith (12-3) opened the scoring less than 30 seconds into the game, but was soon looking at a tie game as Newberry (4-8) snagged a goal off the ensuing draw as Allen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) snagged a pass from sophomore Carly Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and scored her first of the night.

The Avenging Angels rattled off three straight goals before Allen scored her second off an assist from sophomore Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.). Three more Meredith goals were followed by Baxtrom's second assist as she fed Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.) for her first goal of the evening.

Barlage netted the final three goals of the opening half for Newberry, with the second coming off an assist from Marksberry, leaving the Wolves down 11-5 at half to the Avenging Angels.

Allen opened the second period's scoring on an assist from redshirt-freshman Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.), but the Avenging Angels answered with two-straight goals.

With 24:01 left in regulation, Grosvenor joined the scorers column with a free position shot. A minute later Barlage netted her fourth of the night. A scoring streak by Meredith left the Avenging Angels with a 19-8 lead over the Wolves until Allen netted Newberry's final goal of the night with 5:09 left on the clock.

Meredith netted two final goals, to take a 21-9 decision from Newberry.

Barlage and Allen finished with four goals each, while Baxtrom and Marksberry each recorded two assists.

In the possesion categories, Allen led with four draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) notched eight saves, while leading the Wolves with six ground balls. Senior Tricia Powell (Monroe Township, N.J.) led Newberry with three caused turnovers.

Newberry led Meredith 16-10 in ground balls.
