Utah Cruises Past Rival Utah State

Utah freshman midfielder Bennett Jonas led the Utes to a 19-9 victory over the Utah State Aggies on Friday night at McCarthey Field on the University of Utah campus. Jonas had 6 goals and 1 assist in a key win for Utah.

"It feels good to get the win and it's a step in the right direction," said Jonas (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente HS). "We've had a couple of wake up calls in the past few games so hopefully this will push us into a strong end to the season."

Junior midfielder Tyler Grogg (Draper, UT/Juan Diego HS) opened up the scoring at the 7:29 mark and was followed by teammates Jonas and Nash Cantrell (Boise, ID/Timberline HS) to give Utah a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter. Aggie Midfielder Zac Payne pulled on back with 1 second remaining in the quarter to bring the game to 3-1.

Jonas extended the lead after a time and room shot hit the back of the net. Utah State then went on a two goal run back-to-back goals by Blade Garlow to make the score 4-3 for Utah Utah went on a five goal streak, extending their lead to six goals with 6:23 remaining in the first half. Utah State was able to get one goal back but Jonas answered with a goal of his own, making the score 10-4 at halftime.

Just like the first half, Grogg scored the opening goal of the second half in what appeared to be more of the same from the Utes, but the Aggies had different plans. Utah State went on a three goal run to make the score 11-7. With the run brought new hope for the Aggies. Jonas and Garlow would each tack on a goal before Utah scored back-to-back goals by Dillon Tran (Cottonwood Heights, UT/Brighton HS) and Nash Cantrell. Payne scored his second goal of the night to make the score 14-9 for Utah at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Utah defense was rock solid, deflating all chances for Utah State and not allowing the Aggies to score. The Ute offense would add five more goals to make the score 19-9, closing out the win.

"It was nice to come and play well," said Utah Head Coach Rick Kladis. "We had some guys really step up and got points from guys we don't really see on the score card so that was encouraging. Hopefully we can take this momentum in Sunday."

After the 6 goals and 1 assist from Jonas, the Utes were led by Tran who had 3 goals and 2 assists. Cody Cantrell (Boise, ID/Timberline HS) had 2 goals and 3 assists while Pat Griffin (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial HS) had a goal and 4 assists Grogg finished with 2 goals and 2 assists. Utah Goalie Dalton Fontana (West Islip, NY/West Islip HS) had 14 saves. Utah FOS Jake Berkelbach (Richland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep HS) won 19 of 29 face-offs.

The Utes will take on San Diego State on Sunday at 2:00 pm at McCarthey Field
